We are down to 66 days before the New Orleans Saints have their 2026 season opener. New Orleans will open their year on the road when they take on the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Sept. 13. Offensive lineman William Sherman wears No. 66 as the Saints head towards the start of training camp at the end of the month.

A 2025 early season waiver acquisition, Sherman saw light action on the New Orleans offensive front. He'll be battling for a job against several offseason pickups this summer. Until those battles start, we take a look at Sherman as our Saints Player of the Day.

Name (age): William Sherman (27)
Hometown: Allen, Texas
Position: Guard
Height, weight: 6-foot-4, 300 pounds
College: Colorado Buffaloes
Relative Athletic Score: N/A
Drafted: Round 6, 197 overall in 2021 ( New England Patriots )
NFL experience: 2 years
2026 salary cap hit: $1.01 million

At Allen High School in Texas, Sherman was both a football star along with a shot put and discus standout. He'd go on to the Colorado Buffaloes for three years, starting his last two. From there, Sherman became a sixth round choice of the New England Patriots in the 2021 NFL Draft.

New England released Sherman at the conclusion of the 2021 preseason, but brought him back to their practice squad. He'd see action in one game that year, getting some special teams snaps in Week 5 but none on offense. Sherman was re-signed to a reserve/future deal after the season but was released again by the Patriots at the end of the 2022 preseason.

After his 2022 release from New England, Sherman was picked up by the Denver Broncos . Denver released him before the beginning of the year, but he was brought back to their practice squad. The Broncos retained Sherman on a reserve/future deal into the 2024 offseason but released him shortly into the 2024 campaign with an injury settlement. He was brought back again during the offseason on another reserve/future deal but was again released after training camp by the Broncos.

New Orleans added Sherman to their practice squad a few games into 2025. He'd remain there until after mid-season, but was then promoted to the active roster and saw action in seven of the last eight games of the year for the Saints. Sherman got the first offensive snap of his career in Week 10 against Carolina and saw 181 offensive snaps through his seven games. He'd get his first two career starts in Weeks 16 and 17 against the Jets and Titans, playing every snap (132 total) at right guard in place of an injured Cesar Ruiz .

William Sherman again competes for an interior spot on the New Orleans offensive line. It's a position that saw two major acquisitions in free agent pickup David Edwards and fourth round draft choice Jeremiah Wright. Sherman may have an uphill battle on paper, but exhibited himself well in his opportunities in 2025 with the Saints.
