The Dallas Cowboys thought they had won the game on Sunday until the final seconds of regulation and the start of overtime changed everything. They held a 27-17 lead with less than three minutes left, but a series of mistakes allowed the Arizona Cardinals to score 16 unanswered points. The final score was 33-30 , and the loss dropped the Cowboys to 3-5 on the season. This defeat was not just a bad day at the office but a complete breakdown in execution.
The game ended with a 42-yard field goal by Arizona kicker Chad Ryland after the teams traded punts in overtime. Before that moment, the Cowboys had several chances to end the contest, including recovering an onside kick and forcing a punt in the extra period. Instead, their offense turned the ball over quickly, and their defense could not stop the Cardinals when it mattered most. The result was a historic collapse that extended a losing streak against Arizona at their home stadium.
The turning point came when the Cowboys defense appeared to have stopped the Arizona offense. With 2 minutes and 23 seconds remaining, Arizona faced a third-and-long situation that should have forced them to punt. Quarterback Gardner Minshew threw a deep pass that fell incomplete, but the play was nullified by a penalty. Rashan Gary received a flag for an illegal helmet-to-helmet hit on the quarterback, awarding Arizona fifteen yards plus an automatic first down.
This penalty set the Cardinals up on the Dallas 14-yard line, just before the two-minute warning. On the very next play, Minshew found tight end Trey McBride for a touchdown that cut the Dallas lead to just three points. The cost of this penalty extended beyond the fifteen yards, as it allowed Arizona to score quickly while keeping the clock stopped for the two-minute warning. A later touchdown would have left the Cowboys with very little time to respond on their next possession.
DAZN noted that this single mistake gave Arizona a lifeline that the Cowboys could not recover from. The defense had been holding firm until that moment, but the penalty erased the stop and gifted the opposing team a short field. This sequence showed how one bad decision by a defender can unravel an entire defensive effort in a matter of seconds.
After the Cardinals scored, the Cowboys were given another chance to put the game away. Ryan Flournoy recovered an onside kick and returned it into Arizona territory. Following a penalty against the Cardinals, Dallas started a drive from the Arizona 20-yard line. However, the offense could not pick up a single first down during this crucial possession. The team attempted a play-action pass, but Dak Prescott was sacked, and they eventually settled for a 41-yard field goal.
Dallas led 30-24 after the field goal, but they had failed to eliminate the possibility of a comeback. The running game was a major problem for the offense throughout. The Cowboys produced just 93 rushing yards on 39 carries, averaging only 2.4 yards per attempt. This lack of production made it difficult to control the clock and keep the Arizona offense off the field.
The objective of this possession was to pick up a first down and run out the clock, but the offense could not execute. Instead of ending the game, the Cowboys left the door open for Arizona to drive again. This failure to convert on a short field was a critical error that kept the game alive when it should have been over.
The Dallas defense lost control of the game after backup quarterback Gardner Minshew entered the contest. Minshew replaced Jacoby Brissett in the third quarter and immediately exposed the weaknesses in the Dallas secondary. The defense could not slow down the Arizona passing attack once the backup took the field.
The breakdown was not limited to the passing game, as the running game also overwhelmed the Dallas front. Eleven carries yielded 147 rushing yards for Tyler Allgeier, featuring huge gains of 63 and 52 yards that sped up the Cardinals' comeback. These explosive plays allowed Arizona to score quickly without having to grind through long, time-consuming drives. The defense failed to make Arizona pay for every yard gained in terms of time elapsed.
The final possession of regulation illustrated this total collapse. The Cardinals covered 80 yards in just eight plays, culminating in a touchdown pass from Minshew to Michael Wilson with six seconds remaining. DAZN emphasized that the defense had multiple opportunities to stand firm but failed to make the required stops. At the crucial time, the unit failed to locate the specific play needed to maintain the lead.
The Cowboys also dealt with significant injuries that affected their performance on both sides of the ball. In the first quarter, tight end Jake Ferguson exited with an ankle injury and did not return to the game. His absence was felt in the passing game, as he is a key target for Dak Prescott. Later in the second half, rookie safety Caleb Downs was ruled out after suffering a concussion.
These injuries forced the Cowboys to adjust their rotation and rely on players who were not in their regular roles. The loss of Ferguson and Downs weakened the defense and offense at critical points in the game. The team had to manage these absences while trying to hold off a surging Arizona team that was playing with urgency.
The injury report also included other players who struggled to stay on the field, but the losses of Ferguson and Downs were the most impactful for the outcome. A team that is already struggling to find consistency cannot afford to lose key starters in the middle of a close game. These absences contributed to the overall collapse that DAZN analyzed in their report.
This loss continued a long and painful trend for the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium against the Arizona Cardinals. According to FOX 4 News, the Cardinals have secured five straight victories over the Cowboys at their home venue. This streak is a stark reminder of the difficulty the Cowboys face when playing Arizona in Arlington.
The loss also extended the Cowboys' record against Arizona over the last twenty years. Inside The Star noted that the Cowboys were already 1-8 against the Cardinals in that span, and this defeat only added to that awful stretch. The team found a way to lose a game they were dominating, which fits a pattern of failure against this specific opponent.
The Cardinals improved to a 3-5 record with the win, but the victory was significant for their morale. For the Cowboys, the loss drops them to 3-5 and raises questions about their ability to compete in the second half of the season. The history of these matchups suggests that the Cardinals are a team that Dallas simply cannot beat at home.
With the loss to Arizona, the Cowboys must now focus on their next opponent to avoid further decline. FOX 4 News indicated that the squad heads to Indianapolis next week to play the Colts. This game on Sunday, November 8, will be a test of whether the Cowboys can recover from this embarrassing defeat.
The coaching staff will need to address the issues that led to the collapse, including Rashan Gary's penalty and the offense's inability to run the ball. The defense must also find a way to stop the run and protect the quarterback from big plays. The team cannot afford another breakdown if they want to improve their standing in the league.
The Cowboys have a chance to bounce back, but they must learn from the mistakes made in Week 8. The loss to Arizona was a warning sign that the team is not yet ready to win consistently. The upcoming game against Indianapolis will show if they can make the necessary adjustments to stop the bleeding.
