The Dallas Cowboys are dealing with several injury concerns as they prepare for their Week 9 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.
Dallas released its Wednesday injury report, listing 16 players with various ailments. Seven players did not participate, including safety Caleb Downs and tight end Jake Ferguson, while wide receiver George Pickens was among those limited during the opening practice of the week.
George Pickens limited with shoulder injury
Pickens was a limited participant Wednesday while managing a shoulder injury. However, there was an encouraging development: the hamstring issue that appeared on his injury report last week was no longer listed.
The wide receiver's status is worth monitoring throughout the week, especially considering his importance to the Dallas passing attack. Pickens has also seen his playing time fluctuate recently while dealing with injuries.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer acknowledged that the Cowboys need to find ways to get Pickens more involved offensively.
"Again, when you have two of them, it's going to get spread around a little bit CeeDee and George both having good years," Schottenheimer said . "Ceedee's numbers are incredible, but, again, George is the guy that we're focused on knowing we got to get him going more and better, and that starts with me as the play-caller."
Dallas will hope Pickens can make progress before Sunday's matchup.
Caleb Downs, Jake Ferguson among players who missed practice
The Cowboys had several notable players unavailable for Wednesday's session.
Downs did not participate while dealing with a concussion, creating uncertainty around his availability against Indianapolis. Ferguson also missed practice with an ankle injury after leaving the Cardinals game with the issue.
Safety P.J. Locke was another player sidelined with a concussion. Defensive end Malachi Lawrence was unavailable with an ankle injury, with Schottenheimer indicating that Lawrence is expected to miss multiple weeks.
Those absences could create additional challenges for a Dallas defense that struggled to close out its previous game. The Cowboys surrendered a 10-point fourth-quarter lead against Arizona and will need their defensive personnel healthy as they prepare to face Jonathan Taylor and the Colts.
Cowboys have several other players managing injuries
Dallas also had a number of players listed as limited participants Wednesday.
Luke Schoonmaker and Dee Winters returned to the practice field in a limited capacity after missing the previous week. Pickens was also limited, while other players continued working through their respective injuries.
The Cowboys will have two more practices to provide updates before Sunday's game. Their Thursday and Friday participation reports should offer a better indication of which players are trending toward availability.
