The Dallas Cowboys play an actual, real football game on Saturday night when they travel to face the Seattle Seahawks in the exhibition season opener for both clubs. Ironically, the first step for the Cowboys in trying to erase a 30-year Super Bowl drought comes against the reigning champions.
Training camp vibes have been positive for the Cowboys, but now they get to see what they're really made of. While fans aren't likely to see many of the team's best guys in the first preseason game, there are players who will be competing for roster spots getting a healthy number of snaps. Here are five Cowboys to watch for against the Seahawks .
Safety Caleb Downs
No one's sure how much safety Caleb Downs is going to play in the exhibition opener, but head coach Brian Schottenheimer has mentioned the rookie will see some action in his first NFL game. It's the first chance to get a look at the 11thoverall pick and to find out if the hype matches Downs' play.
He likely won't be on the field for a high number of snaps, but it's always exciting to watch a prized rookie get on the field for the first time.
Edge rusher Malachi Lawrence
There's also anticipation to watch the second of the Cowboys' first-round draft picks line up against the Seahawks. Lawrence had a slow start to training camp, but reports are that he's starting to pick things up.
With most of the rookie attention going towards Downs and linebacker Jaishawn Barham , Lawrence has been a bit of the forgotten man. However, if Lawrence can make a strong impression, it would illicit confidence in the edge rusher going forward.
CB Shavon Revel
The second-year cornerback has been having a strong camp, indicating he is ready to get back to the form that made him one of the top CB prospects in college football a few years ago. An injury robbed him of likely being a first-round pick, but Revel's play in camp has demonstrated he's got the ability to get back to that elite level.
After a rough rookie year, Revel looks healthy and ready to compete for a starting CB job in Dallas. Fans will be watching to see if Revel's redemption tour is legit, or just another case of camp hype.
LB Justin Barron
It had been a quiet camp for the 2025 undrafted free agent LB, but Barron's three-interception performance in the joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams opened some eyes. Can Barron back up his big day by playing well in the preseason?
The Cowboys have been searching for quality play at LB this offseason and they could still be trying to find more help at the position before the regular season begins. Barron, currently listed as a third stringer, is fighting for a roster spot, but another solid showing could catapult him up the depth chart. Another great performance like the one against the Rams might make the Cowboys rethink their need for outside help at LB.
A big opportunity awaits Barron against the Seahawks.
Safety Julius Wood
Wood has been one of the standout performers in camp thus far for the Cowboys. Now comes the real challenge for the third-year safety, playing well against another team. It's one thing to produce in practice against the same guys and seeing the same plays in camp, it's quite another to do it versus outside competition who run plays he hasn't seen.
It's a deep safety room in Dallas, but Wood can state his case to make the roster over the next three preseason games. It starts with the first outing against the Seahawks; Cowboys fans will be watching to see if the Wood hype is real.
