The Chicago Cubs are dealing with plenty of blows to their pitching staff. Among them is right-handed starter Cade Horton , who will be out for the rest of the season to undergo elbow surgery.
On Friday, Cubs manager Craig Counsell laid out the timeline for Horton's recovery, per Jesse Rogers of ESPN. He said that Horton had undergone surgery and will be on a 15-16 month recovery plan.
On April 3, Horton was taken out of his start against the Cleveland Guardians after one inning pitched due to discomfort in his forearm. Overall, Horton pitched only two games this year and finished with a 1-0 record, four strikeouts, and a 2.46 ERA.
Last year, Horton finished with an 11-4 record, 2.67 ERA, and 97 strikeouts in his first MLB season. So far, Horton has accumulated a 12-4 career record with a 2.66 ERA and 101 strikeouts.
In 2021, he underwent Tommy John surgery during his freshman season at the University of Oklahoma. Meanwhile, the Cubs are 9-9 to start the season and are last in the National League Central Division. Now, they are beginning a three-game series against the New York Mets on Friday.
Horton's season-ending injury is just the latest afflicting the Chicago rotation. Matthew Boyd has been dealing with a recent bicep injury . Reliever Portor Hodge is out for the season to undergo UCL surgery . Also, left-hander Justin Steele is out with a season-ending elbow injury .
As a result, the Northsiders are lacking depth in their rotation and are relying heavily on the likes of Javier Assad and Colin Rea .
