Portugal 's campaign in the 2026 FIFA World Cup began poorly with a surprising 1-1 draw against DR Congo. Although the team dominated possession, holding the ball for 75.4 percent of the match, they struggled with a lack of clinical execution. Roberto Martínez 's squad managed an expected goals (xG) total of only 0.65, indicating their difficulties in creating high-quality chances. Captain Cristiano Ronaldo faced significant media criticism after receiving limited service and failing to convert the few opportunities he had.

However, the story changed dramatically during Portugal's crucial second group-stage match. In a moment that electrified fans worldwide, Cristiano Ronaldo finally scored his first goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Fox Sports quickly celebrated the breakthrough on X, sharing a video clip of Ronaldo's historic goal, which silenced his critics. Building on this sudden surge of offensive momentum, Portugal scored again shortly afterward, extending their lead to a comfortable 2-0. This second goal came not from Ronaldo but from defender Nuno Mendes , putting the team firmly in control of the game.

This commanding performance served as a swift response to the intense media scrutiny that had followed the opening draw. Before this match, many supporters and analysts argued that Ronaldo's stationary positioning was limiting his teammates , leading to widespread calls for Martínez to make a bold tactical change and bench the 41-year-old icon.

Instead, Ronaldo's timely goal rewarded his manager's unwavering faith and reestablished Portugal as a dominant force in the tournament.
