Grace Holloway reviews the news of Palace's interest in Solly March
According to The BBC, Crystal Palace are considering a move for former Brighton player Solly March. The winger has been recommended to Palace, with a potential deal discussed internally at Palace.
Fans from both Palace and Brighton are already expressing their shock at this news, with many Palace fans not optimistic about what March could bring to the club. There is also a surprise that Palace would consider a move for a Brighton player who has built such a strong legacy with their rivals.
March, 32, left Brighton at the end of last season after the club, to his shock, did not renew his contract following his knee surgery. He spent 15 years with the Seagulls, making 300 appearances across Brighton's journey from the Championship to Premier League.
However, his last few seasons have been disrupted by injuries, including a recurring knee problem which eventually required surgery and resulted in a 227-day absence. Since the 2022/23 season, March has only featured in 19 Premier League games, making it difficult for Pierre Sage and his staff to judge exactly where his fitness and form currently stand.
The winger has spent the last few months training to maintain his fitness, as he believes he can return to playing in the Premier League. In recent days, March spoke to talkSPORT about how he feels his experience and versatility could still make a valuable addition to a top-flight squad.
March also has a previous connection with Palace outside of the rivalry, having spent two years at the club's academy between the ages of 11 and 13 before eventually establishing himself at Brighton.
Is there a logic behind Palace's interest?
The potential deal would be on a free transfer, which could make the move an attractive option as Palace prepare for another demanding season balancing Premier League football, domestic cup competitions and the Europa League.
March would not necessarily be viewed as a direct replacement for one of Palace's attacking stars, nor a direct starter, but instead as a player that could improve squad depth. His versatility is one of his biggest strengths, with the ability to operate as a right winger, left winger or wing-back.
That flexibility could be particularly valuable for Sage, allowing Palace to rotate players in response to the busy scheduling and potential injury problems. There is the difficult question of his fitness and injury record especially with his absence across the last few seasons, that Sage will need to properly consider.
