While the Chicago Cubs have been in the midst of an inconsistent season, the ball club is looking to reach the promised land, as they did in 2016 when the franchise won its first World Series in 108 years. As rumors will surround the Cubs regarding how they can improve the team, this Chicago champion reflects back on a story that was reported by Jon Heyman, which ended up not being true.
On the Peacock MLB broadcast, Fowler would be on the call with Matt Vasgersian and Jim Palmer, where Vasgersian joked about the 2016 champion almost signing with Baltimore . Fowler would respond by saying that he "didn't say anything" about signing with the Orioles at the time, despite Heyman posting on Twitter at the time in 2016 that a three-year deal was to be signed.
"I need to ask Jon Heyman. He was the one who tweeted it out in the first place," Fowler said, according to Jacob Calvin Meyer. "Was like, 'Wait, what?' I'm calling my agent, and I said, 'How do you know something I don't know? I didn't put pen to paper? I didn't agree to this.' It's like the Arson Judge thing, like that's crazy."
Former Cubs star Dexter Fowler on if a deal with the Orioles was close
The Cubs outfielder who helped the team win the World Series in 2016 would be asked if there was a verbal agreement with Fowler and the Orioles, which the former player said there wasn't, even that "we were nowhere close." When Palmer would respond with "Well, how do we know that?", Fowler was quick to answer.
"Because they came out after we signed and said, 'Yeah, we were nowhere close to signing Dex.' So I apologize — I shouldn't have to apologize to the Orioles fans. Trust me, I love hitting here. And I love playing here. The fans are great," Fowler said.
At any rate, Fowler would head to the St. Louis Cardinals in 2017 after the Cubs' historical 2016 season, as there is no denying how his impact on the team during that season's World Series will live forever in team history.
