When Will Stein first became the new Kentucky Football head coach, one of his first big decisions was what to do with quarterback Cutter Boley.
On the one hand, Boley showed flashes of becoming a solid SEC starter in his first two collegiate seasons. But on the other hand, the Hodgenville (KY) native committed too many turnovers for the Wildcats to feel comfortable moving forward with him as the starter, at least without being challenged.
That's why, when Stein arrived, he offered Boley a minimal NIL deal and made it clear he would find more QB competition in the transfer portal. That ultimately led Boley to consider other options before he made his way to Arizona State, while Kentucky eventually landed Notre Dame transfer Kenney Minchey.
While Boley started the season off with a six-touchdown performance in a win over Morgan State, it's gone downhill ever since. He's thrown just seven touchdowns vs. five interceptions in his last five games while throwing multiple pick-sixes, including one in last Saturday's blowout loss vs. Texas Tech.
Now, Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham is set to make a change, as backup Mikey Keene is set to get the starting nod over Boley this week vs. Kansas State, according to CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz.
In addition to the seven interceptions, Boley has also taken nine sacks this year and fumbled twice, losing one. Last year at Kentucky, he threw 15 touchdowns vs. 12 picks while taking 21 sacks and fumbling five times, losing two.
It's a tough break for Boley to lose his job midway through the season. The good news is the junior has two more seasons of eligibility, so there's still time for him to get to a level where we see more of the highs and less of the lows.
