David Ortiz built a Hall of Fame career with the Boston Red Sox, but one of his biggest post-retirement moves came away from the baseball field. The former slugger purchased a vacant lot in Pinecrest, Florida, for $1.5 million in 2016 and later sold the custom-built mansion on the property for $10.55 million.
Ortiz bought the roughly one-acre property in the same year he retired from Major League Baseball. Rather than purchase an existing home, he developed a contemporary mansion that was completed in 2019. Four years later, the property became the most expensive home sale in Pinecrest at the time.
The 10,178-square-foot residence featured five bedrooms and eight bathrooms, along with amenities designed for entertaining. The home included a custom theater, a sports bar with a nine-screen video wall, an outdoor kitchen, a gazebo, a swimming pool and three fire pits.
The sports bar was a fitting addition for Ortiz, who spent 20 seasons in the majors and became one of the most recognizable players in Red Sox history. He finished his career with 541 home runs and helped Boston win three World Series championships.
In February 2023, Ortiz listed the Pinecrest mansion for $12.5 million. The property eventually sold for $10.55 million, setting a local record and surpassing the $10.5 million purchase price Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro had paid for a Pinecrest home in December 2022, as reported by Front Office Sports .

The sale also attracted attention because of the home's distinctive design and baseball-inspired features. South Florida Agent Magazine reported that the residence's amenities included staff quarters and an elevator in addition to its entertainment spaces.
The buyer's identity was not publicly disclosed in the initial reports, although the transaction was handled by ONE Sotheby's International Realty, which represented both sides.
Ortiz's $1.5 million land purchase ultimately became the foundation for a multimillion-dollar property sale. While the final price does not account for construction and other ownership costs, the transaction marked a notable real estate milestone for the retired baseball star.
