David Perron's new deal makes way more sense after major revelation
The Dallas Stars have been among the Western Conference's premier contenders in recent years, but a rocky start to the 2026-27 campaign and a significant injury to Matt Duchene left them searching for reinforcements. That search led them to one of the most well-travelled forwards in modern NHL history.
General manager Jim Nill confirmed earlier reports that the club has signed 38-year-old winger David Perron to a one-year deal with an $850,000 average annual value. The deal, first reported by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, brings Perron to his eighth NHL franchise and officially launches his 20th professional season.

Nill made it clear that the decision was rooted in Perron's track record when the stakes are highest.
"We are excited to welcome David and his family to the Stars organization," Nill said. "He brings a competitive mindset and a proven ability to perform in big moments. We believe his veteran leadership and skill set will be a valuable addition to our group as we continue to build toward our goal of winning a Stanley Cup."
That emphasis on big moments is no empty praise. Perron has appeared in 110 career playoff games, tallying 64 points across those contests. His crowning achievement came in 2019, when he helped the St. Louis Blues capture their first Stanley Cup in franchise history, contributing 16 points in 26 postseason games during that run. He was originally selected 26th overall by the Blues in the 2007 draft. Since then, his career has taken him through Edmonton, Pittsburgh, Anaheim, Vegas, Ottawa, and Detroit. Along the way, he has compiled 812 points in 1,239 regular-season games, scored 20 or more goals seven times, and earned a selection to the 2020 NHL All-Star Game.

Last season was admittedly quieter. Perron posted 28 points in 65 games split between the Senators and Red Wings, with his production dipping noticeably after a midseason trade to Detroit.
Still, the timing works for Dallas. The Stars were sitting at 3-3-1 through seven games with just 16 goals scored when Duchene went down. Core muscle surgery is expected to sideline him for roughly three months. That created both roster space and a pressing need for veteran offensive depth.
Because the contract is prorated, the Stars will absorb only a fraction of the cap hit based on how much of the season remains. It is about as low-risk a move as a contending team can make.

The question now is whether Perron can tap into enough of his former production to give Dallas a meaningful boost. If he can stay healthy and find even a modest groove, the Stars could have a useful depth piece at virtually no cost during a critical stretch of their season.
