Former Chicago Cubs manager David Ross made it clear Wednesday that he would be interested if the New York Mets reached out about their managerial position.
During an ESPN broadcast, Ross was asked whether he would answer a call from the Mets. His response was direct: "I'll answer the phone."
Jon Heyman of the New York Post shared the comments on X, adding another layer to questions surrounding the Mets' dugout heading into the offseason.
Ross has been out of a Major League dugout since the Cubs moved on from him following the 2023 season. He managed Chicago for four seasons and finished his tenure with a 262-284 record.
There is also a connection between Ross and the current Mets manager, Andy Green. Green served as Ross' bench coach with the Cubs, giving the two a history from their time together in Chicago.
The comments come as the Mets close out a difficult 2026 season. New York entered Wednesday with a 69-83 record and sat in last place in the NL East after being eliminated from postseason contention.
The Mets have also dealt with several pitching setbacks down the stretch. Robert Stock recently landed on the 15-day injured list with finger numbness, while reliever Daniel Duarte suffered a severe hamstring strain.

Those issues have forced New York to rely on additional pitching depth as the organization prepares for the offseason.
Ross' comments do not indicate that the Mets are considering a managerial change, but they do put his name into the conversation as the club looks toward 2027. The former Cubs manager has now publicly stated that he would be willing to listen if New York's front office calls.
