David Sandlin bid farewell to the Red Sox on Sunday after he was traded to the Chicago White Sox .
“Forever thankful to all of the Red Sox organization and fans for taking care of not only me, but also being great to my family,” the pitcher posted to X . “Nothing but love and great memories that will always be there. Excited for the new chapter and hungry to get to work! Let’s get it Chicago.”
Sandlin, an exciting prospect for the Red Sox, was part of Boston’s trade that sent Jordan Hicks to the White Sox. The move helped relieve Boston of most of Hicks’ salary.
Hicks, who was acquired by the Red Sox in the June 2025 trade that sent Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants , had a $12 million CBT hit over the next two years. Now that he’s off the Red Sox’ books, he will only cost them $4 million in each of the next two seasons.
Hicks never quite found a groove for the Red Sox , earning an 8.20 ERA in 18 ⅔ innings over 21 appearances before the Red Sox shut him down in September due to a shoulder injury.
Sandlin was an exciting prospect for Boston . The 24-year-old came to Boston via a trade two years ago with the Kansas City Royals . He rose up the rankings and was tabbed as the Red Sox’ No. 11 prospect in their system by Baseball America .
Splitting time between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester in 2025, the right-hander amassed a 4.50 ERA with 107 strikeouts in 106 innings. Sandlin’s fastball could also reach 100 mph.
But with a plethora of pitching depth that includes 10 starting pitchers and a financial motivation , the Red Sox decided to move on.
Sandlin now joins a White Sox team that finished 60-102 and has a chance at cracking their rotation in 2026.
