It's been a rough start to the season for the Miami Heat . The fit between shiny new acquisition Giannis Antetokounmpo and franchise center Bam Adebayo has looked questionable at best, the team's perimeter shooting has been shaky and Miami is also struggling to close out games. However, despite the team's dreadful 1-4 opening win-loss record, it has not been all terrible. In fact, one player in particular has been outshining most of the team through the team's first handful of games.
After Antetokounmpo, who has been putting up MVP-level numbers, Davion Mitchell has arguably been the Heat's second-best player to begin this season.
Miami entered the season as a projected top team in the East after adding Antetokounmpo while also bringing in a plethora of veteran reinforcements such as Klay Thompson, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Bobby Portis. However, the team neglected to fully address the point guard position and committed to Mitchell as the team's starting point guard to begin the campaign. That decision is looking great six games into the season.
Mitchell, 28, didn't have the flashiest of careers before he joined Miami. He had a very successful college career, winning a national title with the Baylor Bears in 2021 and that strong campaign made him a top-ten draft pick that same year. He was selected by the Sacramento Kings with the No. 9 pick and immediately sat behind De'Aaron Fox and Tyrese Haliburton in a crowded guard rotation. Despite Haliburton being dealt to the Indiana Pacers in 2022, Mitchell even saw a decrease in minutes and found himself dealt to the Toronto Raptors in the 2024 offseason. He was only with Toronto for the first half of the 2024-25 season, putting up unimpressive numbers before being dealt to Miami in 2025 and revitalizing his career.
Mitchell has been a great player for the Heat over the last season-and-a-half. He has turned into a real contributor for this team despite being an afterthought of a trade acquisition at the 2025 trade deadline. Entering the season, many believed he may have reached his ceiling in terms of his production but so far, he has improved upon his numbers from last season with increased playing time. Surrounded by a lot of new veterans, there were expectations Mitchell could serve as a low-usage, high-efficiency player but his usage rates have been higher than last season as well.
It's early but he has exceeded expectations and could be one of the Heat's most important players this season. There have been rumors about the team targeting guards such as Kyrie Irving but if Mitchell keeps playing like this, it would be hard to make any changes at the point guard position. He is set to hit free agency this offseason.
