- Defensive keys to a UNC football victory at archrival Duke
With the first ranked victory of Bill Belichick's collegiate coaching career in their back pockets, the North Carolina Tar Heels are fired up on the football field.
UNC upset then-25th-ranked Pitt, 21-17 , inside Acrisure Stadium last weekend. North Carolina (3-2, 1-1 ACC) withstood an early Panthers offensive charge, delivered clutch plays with the football late, then locked Pitt down late in fourth quarter action.

The Tar Heels' next test isn't any easier, with a 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon kickoff at archrival Duke on deck. The Blue Devils (4-1, 1-1 ACC) suffered a heartbreaking, 28-25 loss at Georgia Tech last weekend, giving up a touchdown in the final minute.
Duke sports the country's best running back in true sophomore Nate Sheppard, who already has 743 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns. Add in 161 receiving yards and three more scores, Sheppard is the well-rounded back ever program covets.
North Carolina's defense is about as hit-or-miss a unit you'll find, but the main reason behind 2026 success so far. UNC defensive lineman Xavier Lewis and defensive back Tre Miller earned ACC weekly honors , thanks to their game-changing performances in the upset win over Pitt. The Tar Heels know how to tackle, neutralize opponents in the red zone and get after quarterbacks.
In each of the past two Victory Bell matchups, defense played a sizable role in North Carolina leads. UNC jumped out to a 20-0 lead in Durham during 2024, then held the Blue Devils without a score for most of the fourth quarter last fall.

Can the Tar Heels' defense be a defining factor for a second-straight week? Keep reading below for five defensive keys to a North Carolina victory at Duke.
Hold Nate Sheppard in check

UNC's run defense is suspect, allowing three consecutive opponents and four of five, to surpass the 100-yard mark. The Tar Heels now face the country's top back in Sheppard, who has over 100 scrimmage yards in each of Duke's first five games.
The Blue Devils will take full advantage of North Carolina's struggle to consistently stop ball-carriers. If UNC wants to win, it needs to find ways to neutralize Sheppard's explosiveness.

Get off the field on third down

Early in Saturday's game at Pitt, the Tar Heels' defense struggled getting off the field. The Panthers converted a couple third downs in the opening quarter, leading to a first-drive touchdown.
Duke has the type of offense that will punish these miscues. Add in what should be a favorable crowd at Wallace Wade Stadium, the Blue Devils will make life miserable for North Carolina's defense.
If UNC can at least force punts after a few third down stops, taking back the Victory Bell becomes a much easier task.
Dominate the trenches

Anchored by Lewis and 2025 ACC sacks leader Melkart Abou-Jaoude, the Tar Heels have a defensive line no opponent wants to face.

Lewis leads the conference with 6.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss. He totaled a career-high 12 tackles at Pitt, added a TFL, deflected a pass and combined with Timir Hickman-Collins on a sack.
North Carolina's next challenge is a Duke offensive line that only allowed one sack through its first five games. If UNC wants to win against its greatest rival, it has to get into the backfield on Saturday.
Control the red zone

Opponents may push the Tar Heel defense deep into its own territory, but struggle close to the goal line, scoring on just 73.3 percent of their trips to the red zone.
North Carolina ranks 12th nationally and second amongst ACC schools in red zone defense, allowing just seven touchdowns and four field goals, while forcing three turnovers on downs and a missed kick.

The Blue Devils will march their way into the red zone, but if UNC can hold them scoreless or limit them to field goals, a win is much more likely.
Secondary stars need to continue stepping up

The Tar Heels returned plenty of talent from their 2025 secondary. Those players are shining so far this fall, with last week's upset of Pitt a prime example.
North Carolina lost senior defensive back Kaleb Cost to an injury, but that didn't play much of a factor, thanks to the play of redshirt junior Tre Miller.
With four tackles (two solo), a team-high two deflected passes and a crucial interception, Miller won weekly honors from PFF and the ACC. If you listed to UNC's radio broadcast, Miller consistently earned praise for his play.

Whether Miller is the guy this Saturday or it's someone else's turn to shine, secondary play will be crucial in the Tar Heels' ability to win at Duke.
