The New England Patriots have endured injury, absence, and underwhelming results at wide receiver throughout the 2026 regular season.
Those shortcomings came to a head in Week 8, as New England fielded just three wide receivers on the 53-man roster during their win over the Miami Dolphins . With A.J. Brown out for the fifth time in eight games and Romeo Doubs and Mack Hollins both on injured reserve, the Patriots were left with Efton Chism III, DeMario Douglas, and Kyle Williams as the lone members on the 53 to suit up for game day.

But what they had was more than enough.
That was due, in large part, to the emergence of Douglas, who led all New England receivers with 76 yards, hauling in all three of his targets and adding one electrifying touchdown in the game. Each of his receptions became first downs for the Patriots' offense, with his second reception converting a 4th-and-2, and his third resulting in a 48-yard touchdown that included 31 yards after the catch.
Douglas' performance shouldn't have come as a surprise.
In the midst of a turbulent regular season at the wide receiver position in Foxboro, Drake Maye's consistent connection with Douglas has been especially notable — a building block that the New England offense has been trying to develop since the pair linked up in 2024, but with limited success.

After a major step back in Maye's first full season as a starter in 2025 saw Douglas register career-lows in receptions (31), targets (46), yards (447), and offensive snaps taken (291), 2026 has been a reversal of fortune for the fourth-year wideout.
Through eight games of the 2026 regular season, Douglas leads all Patriots' wide receivers in receptions (26), targets (37), yards (332), and touchdowns (four). His four touchdown receptions have already set a career-best single-season mark, and his 296 offensive snaps taken have already exceeded his 2025 total.
The quick twitch, sudden change of direction, and separation skills that have made Douglas a tough cover throughout his career were on full display on Sunday evening, and have been revealing themselves on a weekly basis this fall.
Per Next Gen Stats, Douglas ranks seventh among all wide receivers in the NFL with an average yards of separation generated of 3.9 yards. Per PFF, Douglas is New England's most frequently targeted receiver against man coverage (13 targets), his average yards per route run of 3.12 yards against man-to-man looks ranks fourth in the league, and his passer rating when targeted under such conditions (134.0) is the 10th-highest.

As the Patriots' offense has heated up over the last month-plus, so has Douglas. In his last four games, Douglas has caught 17 of 20 targets with 250 receiving yards (14.7 yards per reception), four touchdowns, and leads the NFL with a perfect 158.3 passer rating when targeted.
His 94.1 receiving grade on short passes 0-9 yards downfield leads the league during that span, with 10 receptions on 11 targets, 90 yards, one touchdown, and a passer rating of 131.1. But Douglas' efficiency hasn't fallen off as the targets have gotten deeper.
On intermediate, 10-19-yard throws, Douglas' 94.9 receiving grade ranks 10th in the league, and his 149.3 passer rating when targeted is good for eighth. He's been especially dangerous after the catch on those passes, with his average of 15.5 yards after catch per reception ranking fifth in the league during that span.
On deep, 20-plus yard throws, Douglas has hauled in three of four targets with 100 yards receiving, one touchdown, and a passer rating when targeted of 156.3 — the second-highest mark in the NFL, only trailing teammate Kyle Williams (158.3; three catches on three targets, 126 yards, two touchdowns).

Douglas' separation skills have persisted all season — as his 87.5% separation rate is listed as the 15th highest mark among NFL wide receivers, per PFF — and have held steady regardless of the designed route for him in the passing concept.
Here's how Douglas' splits look based on routes run in 2026 (per PFF):

By PFF's metrics, Douglas has been considered "open" or "wide open" on 22 targets this season, and has been targeted just four times when coverage was tight. He's accounted for at least a 100.0 passer rating on crossing routes (his most targeted), seam routes, hitches, in routes, scramble-adjusted routes, and three "others" — including the comeback route that he scored on in Week 8. His overall 126.2 passer rating when targeted ranks 10th in the NFL.

The Patriots have been operating without their de facto number-one receiver for the better part of the 2026 regular season, and in his absence, Douglas has stepped up to fill the role admirably. Not only has he taken over for Brown as the go-to option for Maye in the passing game, he's mitigated the impact left by the departure of Stefon Diggs as the team's top slot wide receiver in 11 personnel sets.
Concerns of previously lacking chemistry between Douglas and his quarterback have long-since been put to bed. Douglas has been a trusted target for Maye all season, and that's been a rare commodity considering the situation in the room around him. He's made the most of his expanded opportunity, finally turning physical potential into tangible production.
As the Patriots do return to health along the boundary, Douglas' impact in the offense will only grow while opposing defenses are stretched sideline-to-sideline in an attempt to take away a host of receivers that can all generate explosive plays.
The present has been transformative for Douglas; the future may be even brighter.
