In 1992, Derek Jeter received an $800,000 signing bonus from the New York Yankees after being selected sixth overall in the MLB Draft. Three decades later, the Hall of Fame shortstop was preparing to leave the Miami Marlins with his 4% ownership stake valued at approximately $44.8 million.
Jeter's journey began on June 1, 1992, when the Yankees selected him out of Kalamazoo Central High School in Michigan. Five teams passed on the future star before New York made its pick. The young shortstop chose professional baseball over his commitment to the University of Michigan, signing for $800,000.
The investment paid off on the field. Jeter spent 20 seasons with the Yankees, winning five World Series championships before retiring after the 2014 season. His playing career established him as one of baseball's most recognizable figures and later opened the door to a front-office role.
In 2017, Jeter joined investor Bruce Sherman's ownership group to purchase the Marlins for $1.2 billion. He became the franchise's chief executive officer and helped oversee its business and baseball operations while holding a 4% stake.

However, the transition from player to executive brought different challenges. Miami recorded 218 wins and 327 losses across four seasons under Jeter's leadership, reaching the postseason only in the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.
On Feb. 28, 2022, Jeter announced he was stepping down as CEO and ending his relationship with the franchise. His departure also included relinquishing his ownership stake, which was valued at roughly $44.8 million. As Front Office Sports reported , Jeter cited differences over the franchise's future direction.
The decision marked the end of a five-year partnership that began with a $1.2 billion franchise purchase. Although the Marlins' results fell short of expectations during his tenure, Jeter's exit represented a significant business milestone beyond his achievements as a player.
His story began with an $800,000 bet on his baseball potential. Years later, Jeter had built a legacy spanning championships, executive leadership and professional sports ownership.
