Monday night was a great night to wear the maze and blue. Michigan won its first national championship since 1989. Overall, it was a hard-fought game against UConn that ended 69-63.
One of those celebrating was former Michigan Heisman Trophy winner turned college football analyst Desmond Howard. Ultimately, he took to social media to showcase a similarity between the celebrations of Glenn Rice in 1989 and Yaxel Lendeborg in 2026.
Both were holding up a sign that read "Shock the World Boys. Go Blue!" as they were cutting down the net.
"G Rice ➡️ Yaxel. I love it. Congrats @umichbball. Hard earned. Well deserved. #GoBlue" Howard posted.
In 1989, Michigan won its first national championship in program history, defeating Seton Hall 80-79 in overtime. Since then, the Wolverines came up short time and again. Twice they fell short in the NCAA title game in 1992 and 1993, featuring the Fab Five.
Meanwhile, Lendeborg persevered through injuries to play in the big game. In the end, he scored 13 points in 36 minutes of play.
From 1989 to 1991, Howard was a standout wide receiver and return specialist for the Wolverines. In 1991, he won the Heisman Trophy by a large margin. He cemented his place in program history on November 23, 1991, against rival Ohio State.
After scoring on a 93-yard punt return, he struck the now-famous Heisman pose.
In the end, Lendeborg finished the season averaging 15.1 points and 6.8 assists per game while also shooting 51.% from the field.
Now, Lendeborg is projected to be the No.8 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft by the Memphis Grizzlies.
