The New Jersey Devils had high hopes heading into the 2025-26 campaign, and the team fell well short of those expectations. This led to the Devils firing GM Tom Fitzgerald . Now, the team will look to turn the page and get ready for the 2026-27 season.
Part of moving forward is addressing late-season injuries, such as the one to goaltender Jacob Markstrom . Markstrom was shut down late in the year, and now is giving an update on his status , per NHL.com.
"I got MRI pictures done and there's some fluid, but there's nothing major that needs to be done," the Devils netminder said Wednesday. "I don't need any procedure or anything. I'll rest for a little bit and I'm going to start working out here in a couple of weeks. I'm not going to rush anything. My priority is here with the Devils, and I don't want to go (to training camp) not feeling 100 percent or rush something that's going to affect the offseason."
Markstrom was dealing with nagging injuries towards the end of the season and was shut down for the year after his April 7 start against the Philadelphia Flyers . He went 23-19-1 on the year, with a 3.01 goals-against average and a .883 save percentage. The 36-year-old goalie signed a two-year extension ahead of the 2025-26 season, which takes effect next year. He will have an AAV of $6 million for the next two years.
The Devils also have Jake Allen under contract through 2029-30, while Nico Daws is an unrestricted free agent.
The Devils finished the year at 42-37-3 , and will not wait to find out their position in the NHL Draft Lottery, looking forward to the future.
