The Chicago Bears just traded two first-round picks for a defensive tackle, their rookie safety is building a Defensive Rookie of the Year case, and their slot corner back from injury just happens to be their best pass rusher. Somewhere between all of the noise rests Devin Bush, who came to the Bears this past offseason on a three-year $30 million free agency signing .
Bush entered the league as the tenth overall selection in the 2019 draft, and four years in Pittsburgh left many thinking that he was a bust. After a season in Seattle where he played more special teams than he did defense, Bush then went to Cleveland on back-to-back one-year deals.
It had all the makings of a career that was seemingly over. But then his last season in Cleveland Bush set a career high with 125 tackles, three interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns.
Then the Bears offered him $30 million to replace Tremaine Edmunds.
Bush is second on the Bears this season in tackles , totaling 38 at present. He's only led by rookie Dillon Thieneman, with 47. Bush led the Bears with eight tackles at Green Bay in Week 5, in what turned out to be the Bears ugliest game of the season.
He's been heavily involved with some of the biggest plays of the season so far, notably falling on the loose ball after Kyler Gordon strip sacked Michael Penix Jr. to secure the victory in Atlanta in Week 6.
Bush has also been a regular part of Dennis Allen's makeshift blitz packages that have defined the Bears' defense this season. When ESPN's Courtney Cronin selected her best offseason addition of the year, she chose Thieneman, but also said that the only person who came close to him was Bush.
Chicago's defense has survived on contingency plans all season, but the middle has been one of the only spots that's not been one of them. Bush is only 28 years old, under contract, and playing the best football of his career for the second year in a row. The Simmons trade is a blockbuster, but the Bush signing could potentially play out as a better piece of business in the long term.
