The Philadelphia Eagles are staring down a Week 8 matchup against the Washington Commanders with their top wide receiver on the bench. DeVonta Smith was nowhere to be found during Friday's practice session, a clear sign he will not play on Sunday night. This injury news comes after the team lost their quarterback for the season and saw their offense struggle to find rhythm against Dallas.
Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported the situation bluntly in a post on X on October 30. "Last practice of the week for the Eagles and Saquon Barkley makes an appearance. Devonta Smith still sidelined," Garafolo wrote. Smith's absence reduces the team's passing production as they face a division rival trying to climb the standings.

A Season of Bad Breaks
The 2026 campaign has seen injuries pile up week after week for Philadelphia. The team now sits at 2-5 after dropping five straight games, including a 38-21 loss to the Cowboys on Monday night. Smith has missed three of the last four games due to a hamstring issue that refuses to heal. He scored and gained 75 yards on seven catches during Week 6 versus Carolina.
Per Yahoo Sports , six players did not participate in the first practice of the week and remained sidelined for the second session. Should none of these athletes receive clearance, the Eagles will lack their premier duo of receivers plus all four leading running backs, given that three backs are already on injured reserve. The depth chart is so thin that the offense risks becoming one-dimensional against a Commanders defense that has shown it can exploit weakness.
Excuses Won't Fix the Roster
While the injury list is long, not everyone on the team is ready to use it as an excuse for the losing streak. Jordan Mailata, the starting left tackle, spoke to reporters on Thursday and made it clear that the team cannot lean on bad luck to explain their failures. The defense surrendered 416 yards to Dallas, demonstrating the unit no longer possesses its edge, marking the highest yardage total permitted throughout the Vic Fangio era.

Landon Dickerson remains uncertain about his future in Philadelphia, adding another layer of drama to an already chaotic season. Dickerson provided a cryptic response when asked about his long-term outlook earlier this month. "That's a great question. Do they have a media day for Nick [Sirianni] and Howie [Roseman]? You can ask them that," Dickerson said. With Cam Jurgens already traded away, the offensive line could face further changes if the team decides to rebuild.
The Sunday Night Test
Washington enters the game at 1-4-1, looking like a team with a bigger mess on its hands than Philadelphia. The matchup gives the Eagles a chance to affect their season before the trade deadline, when major roster moves are common. Another loss would push general manager Howie Roseman to consider blowing up the roster and making big trades to officially start a rebuild.
The injury report released Friday indicated that Smith's return remains unlikely. Without their star receiver and with Tanner McKee under center, the Eagles must find a way to score against a Commanders team that is also struggling.
