Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Corbin Burnes will remain with the club after deciding against opting out of his contract , committing to four more seasons worth $140 million through 2030, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported on Thursday. Burnes signed a six-year, $210 million contract with Arizona in December 2024, making it the largest deal in franchise history at the time, surpassing Zack Greinke's $206.5 million agreement from 2015. However, injuries have considerably limited his contributions during the first two years of the partnership.
The 2021 NL Cy Young Award winner made 11 starts in 2025 before undergoing Tommy John surgery in June after suffering a torn ulnar collateral ligament. His recovery extended into the following season, with a teres major strain in June delaying his anticipated return. Although Burnes eventually came off the injured list in September 2026, he managed only three starts before shoulder inflammation sidelined him again.

His limited appearances yielded disappointing results. Burnes surrendered nine earned runs across 10.1 innings, recording a 7.84 ERA while allowing five home runs. His velocity and command were inconsistent, and he was unable to effectively utilize his cutter. In his final outing, he gave up three home runs in 2.2 innings.

Nevertheless, the Diamondbacks remain hopeful that a full offseason will help Burnes recover his previous form. The shoulder inflammation is not expected to become a long-term issue, although his workload could be restricted after missing most of the past two seasons.
Burnes own a career 3.20 ERA across 213 appearances, including a 2.86 ERA from 2020 through 2025. He will turn 32 before the 2027 season begins.
His decision also leaves Arizona responsible for the remaining financial commitment, even as the organization is expected to reduce its payroll to some extent next season. Burnes reportedly turned down larger offers from other teams when signing with the Diamondbacks, with his family's home in Scottsdale among the considerations behind that decision.
With Burnes expected back in the rotation, Arizona can pair him with Eduardo Rodriguez, Merrill Kelly, Brandon Pfaadt and Ryne Nelson. Arizona could also explore bringing back Michael Soroka, who has a $10 million mutual option, or add another pitcher to bolster the starting staff.

The Diamondbacks will now need their record-setting investment to prove its worth through consistent production, with Burnes' health and effectiveness central to the rotation's outlook for 2027 and beyond.
