The most surprising part of the Hornets ' latest roster move isn't the name on the jersey. It's the specific dollar amount tied to a player most fans have never seen in a Charlotte uniform. According to Hoops Rumors , the team signed guard DJ Armstrong on a contract that could pay him up to $91,000 in a single bonus if he clears a specific hurdle. This financial structure completely shifts the goal of the signing.
Armstrong is the son of former NBA guard Darrell Armstrong, a fact that brings instant name recognition to the organization. Yet the deal itself points toward a development plan rather than an immediate rotation spot. The team announced the signing, filling a roster spot that opened up after waiving Bez Mbeng just one day prior. No details were provided on the base contract terms, which is standard for this type of agreement.

The Greensboro Gateway
The real story lies in where Armstrong is expected to play. Hoops Rumors reported that the deal is likely an Exhibit 10 contract, a specific tool used to bring players into the G-League system. Armstrong qualifies for the massive bonus only upon being waived by the Hornets and spending a minimum of 60 days with the Greensboro Swarm. That affiliate team is Charlotte's direct link to the minor league circuit. Does anyone really think a player gets a five-figure payday just for showing up to practice? Hardly.
This setup tells fans that the Hornets aren't expecting DJ to start next to LaMelo Ball immediately. Instead, they want him to prove his worth in the minor leagues first. RotoBaller NBA noted that Armstrong appears headed toward a G-League role, which aligns perfectly with the financial incentives built into his contract. The team gets a talented shooter without using a full roster spot, and the player gets a shot at a big payday if he performs well in Greensboro.
Shooting Numbers That Stand Out
Why would the Hornets take this chance on a college player? The stats from his last season suggest he has the skills to stretch the floor. According to Hoops Rumors, Armstrong played 33 games for UMBC and averaged 16.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.5 assists. He shot 46.4% from the field, showing he can hit shots inside the arc as well as from deep.

His three-point shooting is the specific skill that likely caught Charlotte's eye. Last season, the America East Conference saw him lead in three-point shooting at 41.9%, per Hoops Rumors. RotoBaller NBA added that he also led the conference in threes per game at 2.7. Following a title game performance featuring 33 points and seven triples, he received conference tournament MVP honors. Those numbers show a player who can score in bunches when the pressure is high.
A Legacy of Guard Play
The bloodlines here are undeniable, but the pressure to perform is real. Armstrong is the son of former NBA guard Darrell Armstrong, who had a long and successful career in the league. Being the son of a veteran guard means DJ has likely grown up around the game in a way few other players can understand. He knows what it takes to make it to the next level because he has watched his father do it.
Now he has a clear path to show he belongs. The Hornets have an opening on their training camp roster, giving him a chance to compete for a spot before the season starts. If he can replicate his college shooting percentages in the G-League, that $91,000 bonus becomes very attainable.
