The party started early at Kauffman Stadium on Thursday, but the Kansas City Royals were the ones getting soaked. The Chicago White Sox rolled past the home team 9-1 to lock up their first playoff spot since 2021, and the cost was steep for the locals. Pitcher Randy Dobnak gave up six runs in just 1.1 innings, and his mistakes were the main reason the celebration happened on the visiting team's turf. This wasn't just a loss; it was a blown opportunity for a season that already felt like a long slog.
The Mistake That Changed the Game
Everything fell apart in the first two innings when Dobnak couldn't hold the White Sox hitters. A throwing error on a bunt opened the door, and Miguel Vargas drove in the first run with an RBI single. Things got worse in the second inning when he tried to pick off a runner but threw to first base with nobody covering the bag. That blunder let Braden Montgomery score easily from second base. Dobnak admitted the confusion after the game, telling reporters, "As far as I'm aware, I don't know if I've even practiced that with the Royals yet. But that's on me, I got to know what to do." It is a rare moment of honesty from a player who just handed a division rival a ticket to the postseason.

Deep Ties Between Rivals
While the scoreline looked ugly, the mood in the stadium was weirdly friendly because of the connections between the two clubs. White Sox general manager Chris Getz played for the Royals and worked in their front office before taking his current job. He thanked the Kansas City staff for making the trip special, saying, "They've gone out of their way to make sure that this was a special experience for us. But I'm just happy for this group. Happy, happy for the Chicago White Sox and our fan base." Former Royals executive Jin Wong also joined the White Sox staff, and he noted that Getz called him out of the blue to join the team. These personal bonds made the loss feel like a betrayal to some, but the White Sox fans just wanted to win.
What Comes Next for Kansas City
Maikel Garcia , who had a great game the night before, said the team just wants to end on a high note. "It's not fun playing when you're not in the playoffs," Garcia said after the game, per reports. "So we're just trying to play to finish this season strong as a team and focus on next year." The focus now shifts to spring training and hoping Dobnak can prove Thursday was just a bad day.
