The Milwaukee Bucks ' 2025-26 campaign has been one of the most challenging of Doc Rivers ' illustrious coaching career. With the Bucks eliminated from the postseason and embroiled in controversy surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo , Rivers was asked Tuesday how much longer he envisions himself coaching.
"I won't answer that, but I have grandkids that I want to see. I'll put it that way. I'll let you figure it out from there," the Bucks coach replied before Tuesday's road matchup with the Brooklyn Nets . I have seven grandkids now and they're all eight years and under. And it kills me every time I miss grandparents' day with each one of them in school. And it's probably time to go see them more, so I'll let you figure out the rest."
The Bucks hoped to rebuild a title contender around Antetokounmpo when they hired Rivers to replace Adrian Griffin in January 2024. They posted a 65-53 record across his first two seasons but lost in the first round both years amid injuries to Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard .

The Bucks have been unable to right the ship this season after waiving and stretching Damian Lillard and trading for Myles Turner . They've posted a 31-47 record with Antetokounmpo appearing in just 36 games and several other rotation pieces missing time.
Rivers' comments about retirement come amid reports that he and the Bucks will part ways this summer.
"There is a growing anticipation that Bucks coach Doc Rivers and the franchise could be heading for some sort of parting or job restructuring after such a trying 2025-26 campaign," Marc Stein reported.
Rivers has amassed a 1193-863 (.580) record across 27 seasons as a head coach. He was named the NBA's Coach Of The Year in 2000 with the Orlando Magic and won a championship with the Boston Celtics in 2008.
Rivers was named a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame's Class of 2026.
