The Los Angeles Dodgers kept the wins coming on Saturday, when the team defeated the Los Angeles Angels 9-2. The Dodgers posted all those nine runs in the first inning. It was a historic performance for this club.
"Dodgers' 9 tied for 2nd-most runs in 1st inning for only runs of game, MLB history," MLB.com reporter Sarah Langs posted to X, formerly Twitter.
There are seven other times in MLB history when nine runs were scored in the first inning of the game, Langs reported, which were the only runs of the game. The last time this happened was in 2015.
Langs reported that only once was there a game in which more runs were scored in the first. That happened in 1954, when Cleveland defeated Baltimore 11-3. Those 11 runs were all scored in the first.
The Dodgers' performance on Saturday was memorable for other reasons .
"It also represented the single biggest first inning across Major League Baseball since Aug. 1, 2025, when the Pirates put up nine runs in the opening frame against the Rockies at Coors Field. To find a more prolific first inning in recent franchise history, fans would have to look back to June 2, 2021, when the Dodgers hung 11 runs on the Cardinals," MLB.com reported.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was happy to see his team explode offensively like that. He admits though it would have been nice to see more offense in the final eight innings.
"We went dormant after that," Roberts said. "But I just thought it was great the way we answered in that first inning, and allowing us to get Freddie off of his feet for more than half the game, I thought, was good."
The Dodgers have now won seven of their last 10 games , following Saturday's victory. Los Angeles is first in the National League West with a 42-23 record.
The Dodgers look to sweep the Angels on Sunday.
