Josue De Paula gave the Los Angeles Dodgers a glimpse of his offensive potential during his first major-league opportunity. Now, the organization's top prospect faces another important challenge as he prepares for his first full season in the majors: establishing himself defensively.
The 21-year-old outfielder arrived in Los Angeles in September after progressing through the minor leagues, including a stint with Double-A Tulsa.

Despite limited experience against major-league pitching, De Paula looked comfortable in his brief opportunity, demonstrating the plate discipline and hitting ability that have made him one of baseball's most highly regarded prospects.
His performance also earned him a spot on the Dodgers' postseason roster. However, while his bat appears capable of making an immediate impact, the organization wants to see continued improvement in the field before committing to him as an everyday player.
De Paula's bat is already drawing attention
De Paula recorded 10 hits in 31 at-bats during his September callup, finishing with a .323 batting average and 11 walks in 42 plate appearances. He also struck out just five times, showing an ability to remain patient and make consistent contact against major-league pitching.

His production carried into the postseason, where he drew two walks in three pinch-hit appearances.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts praised De Paula's hitting ability, reinforcing the organization's confidence in his offensive potential. President of baseball operations Andrew Friedman also pointed to the composure De Paula displayed at the plate, even with the pressure surrounding his first major league opportunity.
Still, his immediate role was limited. De Paula primarily served as a designated hitter, and Shohei Ohtani's return from the injured list reduced the available opportunities at that position.
Defense could determine his role in 2027
De Paula received limited opportunities to showcase his defense after joining the major-league club. He played six innings in left field and recorded one putout, leaving the Dodgers with relatively little game action to evaluate.

He did, however, spend time working with third-base and outfield coach Dino Ebel before games. Those sessions were part of the organization's effort to help him develop into a more reliable defender.
General manager Brandon Gomes emphasized that the Dodgers want De Paula to become the best possible defensive outfielder rather than rely solely on his production at the plate.
That development could be particularly important as Los Angeles considers how to balance its established veterans with younger talent. If De Paula can handle an everyday corner-outfield assignment, he could earn a larger role and potentially affect how the Dodgers use veteran outfielder Teoscar Hernández.
Dodgers want continued progress
The Dodgers believe De Paula's first major-league experience provided lessons that extend beyond his performance in games. Working alongside established players gave him an opportunity to observe their preparation habits and understand the daily demands of playing in the majors.

Friedman indicated that the organization wants to see meaningful development from De Paula during the offseason and into next year.
The Dodgers have already seen evidence that his bat can translate against major-league competition. If his defense continues to progress, De Paula could become a more complete player and an increasingly important part of the club's plans.
For now, his offensive ability has established a foundation. The next step is proving he can contribute consistently on both sides of the ball.
