The MLB September roster expansion has given the Los Angeles Dodgers an opportunity to add another versatile option, with the team calling up infielder Alex Freeland from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
The 25-year-old second baseman is set to begin his third stint in the major leagues this season, returning to Los Angeles as the Dodgers look to strengthen their roster for the final stretch of the regular season.
Freeland has appeared in 72 games for the Dodgers this season, posting a .231/.309/.313 slash line with three home runs and 19 RBI across 223 plate appearances. While his offensive numbers have been modest, his defensive versatility could make him a valuable piece for a Dodgers team preparing for another postseason run.

Freeland brings defensive versatility

Freeland was optioned to Triple-A in July when Kiké Hernández was activated from the injured list. Since then, the infielder has continued to provide value with Oklahoma City while gaining experience at multiple positions.
His versatility could be particularly useful for the Dodgers. Freeland has spent time at second base, third base and shortstop in the Pacific Coast League, giving Los Angeles another player capable of filling different roles around the infield.
He has also demonstrated reliable defense, committing just two errors over 320.2 innings. That consistency could help Freeland earn opportunities as the Dodgers navigate the final weeks of the regular season.
Although he has yet to establish himself as a major offensive contributor, his ability to play multiple positions and provide steady defense gives the Dodgers another useful option off the bench.

Dodgers look to rebound after August
The roster move comes after an uncharacteristically disappointing August for Los Angeles. The Dodgers remain in a commanding position in the National League West, holding a 9.5-game lead over the San Diego Padres.
However, their 13-14 record over the past month has raised some questions about the team's form heading into September.
As the two-time defending World Series champions, the Dodgers have much higher expectations than simply winning their division. They will be looking to regain their momentum before the postseason arrives.
Freeland's return gives the team additional depth at an important point in the schedule. With injuries and workload management becoming increasingly important down the stretch, having an infielder capable of playing multiple positions could prove valuable.
The Dodgers will hope that Freeland can make the most of his latest opportunity and help provide stability as Los Angeles begins its push toward another postseason run.
