Prior to their game against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday, the Los Angeles Dodgers made a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers , sending minor league outfielder Damon Keith to the Brewers in exchange for cash considerations.
For the Dodgers, this trade is simply about getting some cash for a player they could afford to lose. Keith was selected by the Dodgers out of California Baptist University in the 18th round of the 2021 draft --- with that in mind, Keith even becoming a player with enough value to trade is a developmental success for the Dodgers.
While reporting the trade on Friday, MLB .com's Adam McCalvy said that Keith will "most likely join Double-A Biloxi", which would make it very plausible that the 25-year-old right-hander could appear in a major league game for the Brewers this season.
For that to happen, however, Keith would need to show a previously unseen capability of hitting at the Double-A level: across 89 Double-A games in 2025, Keith slugged 11 home runs but hit just .226 with a .681 OPS.
Thus far in his minor league career, Keith has shown an ability to hit at the lowest levels of rookie ball and Low-A, but he has been less convincing against the more polished pitching in High-A and Double-A.
That said, Keith's 2024 season, in which he hit .259 with an .836 OPS across 318 plate appearances in Double-A, is likely more indicative of the type of player the Brewers hope to be acquiring. Keith has 15-homer power in his bat and has shown the ability to play any outfield position, and that offensive upside plus defensive flexibility will always be intriguing as a depth piece.
All of this is to say that Keith could very well end up seeing time in the majors, but the Dodgers have such a glut of young outfield talent that the aging prospect is near the back of the line in their depth chart.
In MLB Pipeline's 2026 ranking of Dodgers prospects , five of the top ten and twelve of the top thirty prospects were outfielders; meanwhile, Keith was not ranked at all. With young talent like Josue De Paula, Zyhir Hope, Eduardo Quintaro, and Mike Sirota all on the rise and all age-22 or younger, the Dodgers have no real need for a depth player such as Keith.
The Brewers, on the other hand, have just three outfielders among their top thirty prospects and could afford to give Keith some playing time in Double-A as a result. If he performs well, he's a potential fill-in guy at the major league level. If he doesn't, all that they gave up was some cash.
