The Los Angeles Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles reportedly made a trade on Thursday. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Dodgers are acquiring right-handed pitcher Chayce McDermott from the Orioles. The Dodgers already have plenty of pitching talent on the roster , but they are always open to adding depth. The Orioles are receiving right-handed pitcher Axel Perez in return, per Bill Plunkett of the Orange Country Register.
McDermott was previously a highly-regarded prospect with Baltimore. However, he was recently designated for assignment by the ball club. Now the right-handed hurler is set to receive a fresh start with the Dodgers.
The Dodgers have a deep roster, but they are dealing with some injury concerns . McDermott will begin his time with the Dodgers at Triple-A. Even though he is ending up in the minor leagues for now, the right-hander could receive an MLB opportunity at some point down the road.
McDermott, 27, has only five total career big league appearances. In the minor leagues, McDermott has pitched to a 4.38 ERA across 113 outings (76 starts). He has often spent time as both a reliever and a starter in many of his minor league seasons. It seems as if the Orioles were trying to see where he could be more successful.
One has to imagine McDermott will primarily work as a reliever with the Dodgers given their immense amount of starting pitching depth. Los Angeles has helped many pitchers turn their careers around over the years, so it would not be surprising to see McDermott find success with his new team.
