The Broncos had an opportunity to go up 10-0 over the New England Patriots in the second quarter of their AFC Championship Game.
But on 4th-and-1 at New England 's 14, Head Coach Sean Payton elected to keep backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham and the rest of Denver 's offense on the field rather than send Will Lutz out to kick the field goal.
The result? The Patriots defense getting to Stidham and the quarterback turning the ball over on downs.
New England won, 10-7 and advanced to Super Bowl 60 .
Does Payton have regrets about not going for the three points?
"There's always regrets, you know?," he said after the game. "I mean, look, I felt like, here we are, 4th-and-1. We felt close enough — and it's also a call you make based on the team you're playing and what you're watching on the other side of the ball. So yeah, there'll always be second thoughts."
The Broncos were in the driver's seat by not allowing Drake Maye and the offense to get much going. But blizzard-like conditions in the second half made it difficult for both teams on both sides of the ball.
But an Andy Borregales field goal was the difference in the AFC Championship Game that resulted in a 10-7 win for New England after Christian Gonzalez intercepted Stidham with 2:18 to go in the game.
