Kyle McCord has had a busy week.
After he threw for 226 yards and four touchdowns in the Green Bay Packers ' preseason finale against the Arizona Cardinals , he was traded to the Miami Dolphins for a sixth-round selection in the 2028 NFL Draft.
Now, McCord will be the team's backup quarterback behind Malik Willis . With McCord potentially one play away from becoming Miami's starting quarterback, Willis is helping him acclimate to a new offense, coaching staff, and teammates.
"It was a wild 24 hours," McCord said Wednesday. "I got the call from Gutey [Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst] up in Green Bay , and he told me that I did a good job in camp and they wanted to keep me. But when Miami offered them a pick, it was a good opportunity for both them to get a pick for me and then a good opportunity for me to go from being the three in Green Bay to the two here."
McCord provides upgrade behind Willis
With the Packers already having Tyrod Taylor to back up starter Jordan Love , McCord was expendable. Given the struggles the Dolphins had with their backup quarterbacks during training camp and the preseason, it was a no-brainer to add McCord, who has shown decent accuracy in the pocket.
During the preseason, McCord passed for 446 yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions and a 102.4 passer rating. Conversely, the Dolphins' backup quarterbacks, Quinn Ewers and Cam Miller , both struggled with accuracy and turnovers during training camp and the preseason. That led Miami to overhaul its quarterback room behind Willis.
The Philadelphia Eagles originally drafted McCord in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He spent all of last season on their practice squad.
McCord, 23, then signed a reserve/futures contract with the Packers in January. Green Bay has been known for developing quarterbacks and then trading them for assets, as it did with McCord.
Now, McCord will be reunited with new Dolphins passing game coordinator Kevin Patullo, who was the Eagles' offensive coordinator in 2025.
"As soon as I got the call that I was coming here, that was one of the first things that I thought of — KP is down here, so having a familiar face on the coaching staff is huge," McCord said. "And similar to Malik, with some of the stuff that we have in translating it to the offense last year in Philly has definitely helped, so I'm excited. I think the world of him as a coach, and so being able to link back up with him down here is pretty special."
