The Philadelphia Phillies fired manager Rob Thomson on Tuesday. Former Major League Baseball star Don Mattingly is now the interim manager. His promotion makes MLB history, in a very unique way .
“So, just like that, we have the first father/son GM/manager in MLB history with Preston Mattingly as the Phillies GM and his dad, Don Mattingly, as manager,” USA Today columnist Bob Nightengale posted to X, formerly Twitter.
The Phillies are having a very tough season, with a 9-19 overall record. Philadelphia is tied for last in the National League East, with the New York Mets .
The Phillies recently underwent a brutal 10-game losing streak. That raised pressure on Thomson, who ultimately was not able to hold on to the job as manager.
Philadelphia has been linked in recent days to former Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora. Cora was fired by Boston, following a rough start. Nightengale and ESPN baseball insider Buster Olney have both tied Cora to the Phillies job .
That idea got cold water thrown on it on Tuesday.
“Alex Cora was offered the Philadelphia Phillies ’ managerial job before Don Mattingly, but declined. He has decided to spend time with his family,” Nightengale added in a separate post.
Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, who has a past history with Cora, spoke recently about his frustrations regarding the team’s season.
“There’s no sense of worrying about things you can’t control,” Dombrowski said, per ESPN. “I’ve learned that a long time ago, so I don’t really fret when that type of stuff happens. You get frustrated, but the way you go about it is, well, the next day you got to go do it again, and eventually they end up falling in. And there’s going to be bloopers that fall in and dribblers that come in for us at some time here. You hope it’s sooner rather than later.”
The Phillies start a series on Tuesday against the San Francisco Giants .
