- Draft prospect Keba Keita Q&A: 'I'm an effort, energy guy. It doesn't matter what team I'm on'
It's not often that someone has to learn English and learn to play basketball simultaneously. Keba Keitajust finished up a four-year career at BYU and has now impressed teams during draft workouts to build momentum from a projected undrafted player to a potential second-round pick. Growing up in Mali, basketball was not part of the plan for Keita. He initially played volleyball before moving to the United States at 16 and somehow managed to play two years at Utah before finishing his last two seasons at BYU.
The Mali native talked with HoopsHype about his years in Mali, adjusting to life in America, playing with AJ Dybantsa, what he can bring to NBA teams and more.

What was your life like growing up in Mali?
Keba Keita:It was fun. It was nothing like here. You live in this community where everybody knows each other. You got a bunch of friends, you just go to each other's house and just play, do whatever.

Playing sport together, and playing together other games too. Mainly with soccer, but yeah, it was really like that.
You mention soccer, and it's a sport most people play there. Why did you choose basketball?
KK:I used to play soccer, then started growing and I couldn't wear cleats and none of that stuff. So I went and tried volleyball because some of my uncles, brothers and friends also played volleyball at the time, too.
So I'll go and play volleyball, and the reason why is that when I was playing volleyball, I was playing for a U16 National Team in volleyball, and we went into a championship, and we won, but they didn't give us a trophy and that discouraged me a little bit.

So I went back and kind of quit and I took a few months off. Then my mom wanted me to try something new, so I went and tried basketball. That's the reason really, but I first also didn't think that basketball was a sport that a guy would play because it was rare to see a guy playing basketball, but yeah, volleyball is the reason why I really decided to try and play basketball.

You said you guys didn't get a trophy in volleyball, so nobody got a trophy?
KK: No, we finished first. We won the whole thing, and we didn't get anything. We didn't get no medals like nothing, and the second, and the third, they got medals. We got a little trophy and a little prize. Yeah, it was all this whole weird thing, but yeah, I did not like that, so I literally just quit really after that. I just go to school, come back home, just watch TV, anime, and not really doing much. My mom wanted me to just get out, and so sometimes I'll go out and just watch people play soccer and finally decided to try basketball.

My first week, I didn't like it really. I was like, that's not for me, and so I left the first week. The second time I went back and tried, that was really when I did like it because my first practice, that's also when I had my first dunk. And feeling the way I felt at that moment, I think the excitement and all that stuff made me want to stick to basketball really. Then to a point, it got competitive.
I didn't really play organized basketball until I got here (to the U.S.) really. I think I'm a very competitive person, and so that's something that I also enjoy, and the excitement and the competitive part really. It's those two that really made me stick to playing basketball.
What was the biggest culture shock for you when you came here?
KK:It was everything really. Like seeing the two different side of the world. We all knew what America is like and as a kid, you dream to come here, even if it wasn't for basketball. Everybody really wanted to come here at some point. Just everything really... the food, the people, the culture, especially the language. It was everything, to be honest.

How did you learn to speak English?
KK: I had a tutor who would spend time with me. She would come with me to school, and after school, we'll spend two, three hours, and then I'd spend another extra two, three hours on my own, just trying to learn.

I was at a point where I was really frustrated because I wanted to speak. I wanted to be able to have a conversation. I felt like I wasn't able to because there was a language barrier between me and my host family and they used to really teach me, show me things, how to do things, but also explain it through Google Translate. So all those things were kind of frustrating to me and I didn't really feel smart. I just kind of wanted to feel smart, so I think that's really why I push myself with learning extra, doing extra hours... like doing repair stuff, watching videos, watching movies. It was not an easy process, but I think in less than six months, I was able to really have a conversation.
Would you say it was harder to learn English or pick up things in basketball?
KK:They're both difficult, but also in different ways. Basketball, some things really come to me naturally, but learning English, you have to really learn that. So there's things that come to me naturally in basketball, and so I would say they're both difficult.

What's the most common question you got asked by teams in Chicago during the Combine?
KK:I told them I just really keep it simple. The way I play, I'm an effort, energy guy. It doesn't matter what team I'm on. I am going to bring the same energy, the same mentality, the same effort, on the defensive end. On offense, getting the offensive glass, giving my team second-chance opportunities. That's what I told them. My game's not really complicated. I just really play with a ton of energy and effort, so I think I can play with really anybody, and on any team, because I don't need to score to impact the game.

I'm not trying to limit my game, but I'm also trying to improve certain areas, so I can stay in the game longer, too. When it comes to free-throw shooting, ball handling, not like crazy crossovers and all that stuff, but like a decent keep-and-go or just like transferring the ball... I just feel more comfortable in those areas. Being able to make those quick decisions off the pick-and-roll, or just short rolls. And my touch shots, most people don't know, I mean those [draft] workouts, I do those touch shots, but I haven't been placed in a situation where I can showcase that stuff.
The outside shooting and all that will come after. That's just really my vision of how my game's gonna improve going forward, but I'm also not gonna forget about the things that really also got me here in the first place.
What have teams told you that impressed them during the workouts?
KK:I've heard a lot about my physicality and just really my athleticism. Also, hook shots, I kind of hear that feedback too.

Just keep playing hard, keep playing your game, that's something we talked about. Just don't worry about the feedback too much. When you go through those workouts, just be you. I'm also not trying to go out there to prove something, you know. I'm not going to try to go out there and start shooting threes, just to prove I can shoot threes. I think I really understand my game and I'm not trying to forget the things that got me here and just plan to play my game.

Was there a particular moment along your basketball journey when you realized you had a real shot at making the NBA?
KK:You got to be confident in anything you do. I knew I had a chance just because the way I play, how competitive I am, and I feel like there's a lot of guys out there that I can compete with, and even out-compete them. Also, I feel like if I'm on a team, there's a lot of chances that we're going to win for sure.

When I watch the NBA game, I'm like I can do this. That's maybe cockiness, but I don't know, it's just like... Man, I can do this, I can play in the NBA. Also, I feel like I improved every single year since I started. You know, I started late, so I still have a lot to learn, but I feel like there's a lot of things if I look back to my old self. Literally my high school coach, coach Peterson, he literally looked me dead in the eye, and he told me, 'Get your crap together, you suck right now, you need to get better. You got a long way to go'. Thinking about those times and now, I really realized that yeah, I can play an NBA game for sure.
What players do you watch and model your game after?
KK:I watch a lot of players, but I don't really try to copy them. If anything, I just really like the IQ, like how to read the game really is something that I feel like is going to help me a lot. Because I really play with energy and effort, so there's a lot of players that I watch. I like Draymond Greena lot.
When it comes to comparison, I think the role that I would fit in right now in the NBA, it would be kind of like [Clint] Capelaand Isaiah Stewart. So I see myself playing those roles in the NBA, but in comparison, I feel like we're different players.

You played with AJ Dybantsa at BYU. How good do you think he will become in the NBA?
KK:He can be pretty, pretty good. We all talked about AJ, we've seen AJ, we know what he can do. I'm literally on the bench [watching], and I'm like how is he a freshman and he's doing those moves, you know? How is he a freshman and playing like he's literally a pro? You play pick-up with some pros, and some of them don't even have these moves. And it's kind of crazy to see that.

But I think the guy that I'm really most excited about to see is Richie Sanders. With the way Richie played, man [chuckles]. I think he can play in any team. He's unselfish. He's caring. He's a great person. He's a great teammate. Even a better person, really outside of basketball. The way he approached the game and how he's always locked in, how every day he brings the same energy. Richie is just a guy that always brings it, and he's a winner. He wants to win. I'm excited to see which team he's going to end up on, and I think his game will translate to the NBA.
What's the best piece of advice someone gave to you?
KK:The best piece of advice is from my mom. Basically, just never forget where you came from. It doesn't matter where you go. It doesn't matter what you do. Just do it with ambition, and things are going to get hard. It's just really life advice. Things are going to get hard, and it's not going to be easy. If you have a goal and you want to achieve your goals, you're going to have to go through a lot of tough times. Life's gonna test you, it's gonna beat you down, and then it's up to you to stay down or get up and keep working. Because there's gonna be a time where it's gonna be tough, and just remember where you came from.
I have my mom in the back of my head all the time in anything I do. And that's also how I got really where I am right now with that advice and thoughts, because if anything, that also taught me something about myself... like resilience. I feel like I'm very resilient because of the things that I've been through and went through. So that really helped me a lot, really, because life definitely tested me, and then I still have my goals, and it's not easy.

I mean, going through this process, it's a blessing, but it's also not easy. So that's why it's a lot mentally and physically, but also now I have my mom and also my support, important family, people with me too. And those are some motivations that helped me get through a lot of things. That was the best piece of advice, really, because I can apply that to anything.
