SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Drake Maye sat at the post-game podium dejected following the Patriots’ Super Bowl 60 loss to the Seattle Seahawks .
With his jersey off, Maye wore a white shirt with no sleeves. His right shoulder was covered in red blotches, which were reflective of how many times he was hit. It was also a sign of what he dealt with on Sunday night.
Maye suffered an injury to his right throwing shoulder in the Patriots ’ AFC Championship win over the Denver Broncos . When asked how his shoulder was feeling, the Patriots quarterback gave an honest answer – he didn’t really know.
Maye said the Patriots’ medical staff gave him a pain-killing injection before Super Bowl 60.
“My shoulder feels - um, they shot it up, so not much feeling,” Maye said. “Feels good to go. I felt alright.”
After suffering the injury in Denver, Maye was a limited practice participant. He also missed Friday’s practice, two days before the team traveled to San Francisco . This week, Maye was on the Patriots’ injury report as full participant in all three practices in Santa Clara.
Maye and the Patriots offense had its hands full on Sunday night. The Seahawks defense put on a dominating display, hitting Maye at will. The quarterback was sacked six times and hit 11 times total on Sunday.
Maye finished 27-of-43 for 295 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He was also strip-sacked, losing the fumble.
Maye had an outstanding second NFL season, where he earned Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors. The quarterback led the NFL in passer rating and completion percentage.
Despite the shoulder injury, Maye said he didn’t think the shoulder limited him in the Super Bowl.
“I think it’d be hard to say that,” Maye said. “I was feeling good enough to be out there. If I’m out there, I wouldn’t put the team in harm’s way to not be myself. Just didn’t make the plays tonight.”
