While impressions from this year's trade deadline are slowly settling, reactions to certain trades continue to come in from all sides. With several star players switching teams, it's clear that the direction of some franchises has changed.
However, Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green believes that the Washington Wizards , with their two superstar acquisitions, have become a team to watch for next season, and for the future as well, depending on how the rest of the cards play out.
Getting two stars at a discounted price
If we circle back to January 9, the Wizards made their first real splash in the market by bringing in one of the best assist guys in the league, Trae Young . Although Young has been out for most of the season, and his fit with the new-look Atlanta Hawks was often in question, it was clear that Washington got this talented 27-year-old for a discounted price. However, the front office of the Wizards didn't stop there, as they also acquired Anthony Davis , who was also in a similar situation, injured and a questionable fit with the Dallas Mavericks .
Davis and Young have 14 combined All-Star appearances between them, and it's clear that with these moves, Washington decided to accelerate their rebuild process and go into a win-now mode. And that win-now mode, according to Green, could be as soon as next season, when their draft pick becomes clearer.
"This team could look completely different next year. We are talking about a team that is at the bottom of the league right now. This team could look completely different next year," Dray reiterated in an episode of his podcast.
"And when I say completely different, I mean completely different in a good way. With all the young talent, with AD, with Trae Young … the possibilities are endless. But that's a sign of a good front office when you give yourself endless possibilities," the Dubs enforcer added.
The optimism is high in D.C.
The Wizards are 14-38 for the season, currently "fighting" for the last spot in the Eastern Conference, which would greatly improve their chances of getting a high pick in this year's stacked draft class. AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Cameron Boozer, or any of the top-tier prospects would perfectly blend with this new-look Wizards team, bridging the present and future of the franchise.
Sure, the status of Young and Davis is still up in the air, and the front office will have to manage their long-term commitment as well as their injury history. However, the signs of positivity are there, as Dray noted.
"Washington has been dying for a star. D.C. has been dying for a superstar. AD can very much so be that. You know, bring some excitement to that building…" he concluded.
With these two stars looking to get back into their glory days, this pressureless situation in the Nation's Capital could be just what the doctor ordered. And with the young core of Alex Sarr , Keyshawn George, Tre Johnson , and others, the sky is the limit. Next season can be a turnaround, and the fans are all in for it.
