Cincinnati Bengals director of player personnel Duke Tobin addressed the media during a press conference on Friday in an unprecedented move for the team.
Generally, Tobin only speaks to the media at draft-related things like scouting combines, so some fans wondered if there might be news alongside the chat. Potential ideas included an expanded scouting department, or perhaps even an official "general manager" tag finally happening.
Instead, Tobin was adamant about the collaborative nature of contract talks, the scouting department and stressing the need to improve competition on the roster while doing a better job of finishing games.
"We still have a championship team in my mind," Tobin said. "We have elite, world-class players. We had challenges this season."
Tobin, when asked about conversations with Joe Burrow: "We have to find that complementary football. I'm always open and honest with Joe."
Perhaps the comment that summed up the presser best was Tobin revealing that his scouting department would remain the same size because of the impact on collaboration:
"In terms of our scouting staff, it is the size that it is because I think the collaboration is better at that size. We have never lacked for information on a player."

Monday after the season ended, Bengals president Mike Brown issued a statement to fans while announcing the retention of head coach Zac Taylor and Tobin. Like Friday's presser, the fact Brown mentioned Tobin's name at all was a new development for the franchise.
But with no highlight-worthy solutions, onlookers caught a vibe that the Bengals would keep doing things their way:
