This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke with Pro Football Hall of Famer Dwight Freeney.
In his interview with Easton Jr., Freeney, who participated in this year's American Century Championship, held at Edgewood Tahoe and aired on NBC and Peacock, shared a defensive perspective on Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes' injury going into the new season.
"Well, I think you know the first week you're probably going to have to play it as if it never happened, because you don't have enough data out there on who the new Patrick (Mahomes) will be," said Freeney. "Look, they're going to protect him. They're going to keep him in the pocket as much as possible, but Patrick, being Patrick, he's going to want to extend plays. That is who he is. How he does that and how he looks while doing it will be the story."
Mahomes is working to recover from the ACL and LCL tears he sustained last year against the Los Angeles Chargers. Freeney believes pass rushers will be watching his recovery closely in the early stages of the season.
"The more data that builds up showing how he likes to get out of the pocket- does he still like to scramble? Do they still call the same calls? That's going to tell the story of how teams will prepare against the Kansas City Chiefs going forward. If he shows the first week or two weeks that nothing's changed, then obviously the same game plan applies," said Freeney. "Still, if they're all of a sudden they're protecting him, protecting and protecting him, and he's not doing much; he doesn't look like the same guy. Now, as a pass rusher, I know where he's going to be."
The annual tournament awarded $750,000 in prize money, much of which the celebrity players donate to local and national charities.
