Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Tanner McKee has broken his silence regarding the team's decision to bench him for Joe Milton moving forward.
McKee started the last three games for Philadelphia in place of usual starting QB Jalen Hurts, who is sidelined for the remainder of the season due to blood clots, and he went 0-3 in those starts. As a result, the team decided to make the switch to Milton.
Tanner McKee Breaks Silence About Benching
On Thursday, McKee got brutally honest about the demotion. He explained that while he would've loved to continue on in the role as starter, he plans to use the situation as a learning experience.
"Obviously, as a competitor, [I] would love to be out there as much as I can." McKee said.
"I think when things happen that are unfortunate, you got to control what you can control, and you have to look inward, think of, you know, what can I do moving forward to better myself, better the team. And so that's the approach that I'm going to have."
At the end of the day, McKee knows that the ultimate goal is to win games, and he fell short of that goal during his stint as the starter in Philadelphia this season.
"I think when you step on the field, you have to play, obviously, play to the best of your ability, but you have to perform with the guys that are around you. And we have great players," McKee said .
"We had great players on the field, and the expectation is to go out and win. And unfortunately, I fell short doing that, and I got to be better and make better plays."
Philadelphia's struggles over the past few weeks can't be pinned solely on McKee. After all, several of them existed before he took over for Hurts. Plus, injury issues prevented him from having a full arsenal of weapons around him, both on the offensive line and in the skill position players.
But, excuses aside, McKee also didn't play very well, and he did little to elevate the offense for Philadelphia. Given his streak of underwhelming performances, it's not especially surprising that the Eagles opted to go in a different direction.
In his three starts, McKee tallied 72 completions for 638 yards and two TDs. He also had three turnovers: Two interceptions and a lost fumble.
It remains to be seen what the rest of the season will look like at the QB position for Philly, but it's fair to wonder if we've already seen McKee take his last snaps with the team.
