When the Dallas Cowboys selected Luke Schoonmaker with the No. 58 overall pick in the second round back in 2023, there was a lot of hope that he was going to come in and be a guy who could make a major impact for the Cowboys on the offensive side of the football.
The tight end did a lot of good throughout his young college career, with the expectation that his game would translate to the NFL. Unfortunately for the Cowboys, that really hasn't been the case just yet.
In Schoonmaker's defense, playing in the NFL was much different than anything else.
There's a reason why some guys are as highly touted as him and don't come into the league and find success, even after impressing at earlier stops.
This season, the 28-year-old hasn't done a whole lot, currently posting two receptions for 21 yards. He seems to be an afterthought in an above-average Cowboys offense, which led Bleacher Report to recently suggest that the Philadelphia Eagles should have some level of interest in him.
"Schoonmaker has caught just 51 passes for 459 yards and three touchdowns, and he's now firmly cemented behind starting tight end Jake Ferguson. He's played just 24 percent of the offensive snaps this season.
"Now in the final year of his rookie deal, Schoonmaker is unlikely to establish himself as a starter in Dallas, and he's not going to earn a lucrative free-agent contract with modest numbers. He would benefit from joining a team that either lacks a No. 1 receiving tight end or has lost one to injury. Ideal Landing Spots: Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles," Bleacher Report wrote.
The Eagles making a play for a tight end right now seems possible, as they're dealing with injuries in the unit and recently brought Zach Ertz back.
At this stage of Ertz's career, he's not really the same player that he once was, so Philadelphia might want to go in a younger direction.
The only problem is that Schoonmaker hasn't really proven much in his NFL career, so he's not exactly a guarantee to be much of anything in Philadelphia if they go that route.
At the same time, the Eagles have shown over the past couple of years that they're willing to take a chance on buy-low candidates, and he'd be one of them.
