Egypt has put together one of the most impressive runs at the 2026 World Cup , including grabbing an early lead over Argentina and Lionel Messi in the round of 16. The squad won one game and drew two in the group stage of the World Cup, tying Belgium on five points but finishing second due to a +2 goal differential compared to Belgium's +4.
Egypt went on to draw 1-1 with Australia in the round of 32 and advanced on penalties. They've been fueled by goalkeeper Mostafa Shoubir, who tallied 10 saves over the team's first four World Cup games.
Shoubir also posted one clean sheet with 10 saves and only two goals allowed during international friendlies leading up to the 2026 World Cup. He also had two starts in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, allowing no goals while recording 9 saves and 2 clean sheets.
Egypt's goalie, Mostafa Shoubir's club team, Al Ahly
Shoubir has played club soccer for Al Ahly in the Egyptian Premier League, the highest tier of the Egyptian League system, for six seasons. Al Ahly recently played in the 2026 CAF Champions League, falling to Esperance Sportive de Tunis 4-2 on aggregate in the quarterfinals, and Shoubir posted a clean sheet in the first leg against the club before Al Ahly lost 3-2 in the second leg.
In June 2025, Al Ahly FC drew 0-0 with Inter Miami FC in the opening game of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, though Shoubir wasn't in the net for that matchup.
