Despite clinching a playoff berth in 2025, the Boston Red Sox still have a ways to go before they can win trust back from their wary fan base. This city cannot just forget about the insulting comments from management, the Mookie Betts trade , the Rafael Devers-Alex Bregman situation or the three last-place finishes since 2020. People can only endure so much dysfunction. They expect sustained success, but so far in 2026, they have seen the opposite.
Boston entered Tuesday night's home game versus the Milwaukee Brewers with an MLB-worst 2-8 record. "Sell the team" chants have reverberated through Fenway Park on multiple occasions, and perhaps most stunning, fans headed for the exits with the squad trailing by only two runs on Monday. Their hopelessness was validated, as the Brew Crew pulled out an 8-6 win. The Sox-induced groans continued in the second game of the series.
What should have been a surefire double play instead became a fitting illustration of the club's season to this point. Veteran shortstop Trevor Story and rookie second baseman Marcelo Mayer failed to get on the same page in the fourth inning, as the latter mistakenly thought the former was going to handle the ground ball on his own, via Lucas Parmenter. Mayer was charged with an error, Boston's 12th in just 11 games.
The sloppy defense, which has been a problem for years, highlights the identity change the franchise urgently requires. Fortunately, the energy in the stadium shifted soon after.
Story and Mayer linked up for a double play to retire the side. Story muscled a two-RBI double in the sixth, and the Red Sox ultimately hung on for a desperately-needed 3-2 win. Plate discipline, bullpen mishaps, Roman Anthony 's throwing arm and Alex Cora's management style will still draw concerns from fans, but this was the type of hard-earned outcome that has been missing for the first two weeks of the season.
Trevor Story and Marcelo Mayer must work on their in-game communication, and the team will have to consistently play smart baseball. Otherwise, the 2025 postseason trip will just be a nice memory sandwiched between disappointment.
The Red Sox will try to earn their first series victory of the year when they face the Brewers (8-3) on Wednesday afternoon.
