- ESPN Reveals What Houston Texans Are Lacking in Offense
ESPN has identified the Houston Texans' lack of a reliable running game as a major weakness in an offense that has otherwise found success through the air. Despite strong production from quarterback C.J. Stroud , Houston's limited rushing output continues to prevent the unit from reaching its full potential during the 2026 NFL season.
Stroud has been one of the team's most productive offensive players, ranking second in the league with 1,712 passing yards. His performance has helped keep the passing attack effective, giving Houston a dependable option when moving the ball downfield. However, an offense that relies heavily on its quarterback can become predictable, particularly when opponents do not have to devote significant attention to stopping the run.

The Texans are averaging just 84.8 rushing yards per game, ranking 25th across the NFL. They have also recorded 32 rushing first downs, tied for 22nd in the league. Those figures highlight the team's difficulty generating consistent production on the ground, limiting its ability to control the pace of games and maintain favorable situations on third down.

David Montgomery's struggles have added to the problem. Acquired through a trade in March, the running back is averaging a career-low 2.7 yards per carry, leaving Houston without the expected impact from its backfield addition. Montgomery also missed Week 6 because of a groin injury, further complicating the team's efforts to establish a consistent rushing attack. His return and ability to improve his efficiency could become important factors in the offense's development.

Houston's run game, of the lack thereof, has been revealed as the team's major offensive issue this season. This is detailed more in an analysis by DJ Bien-Aime for ESPN.
Biggest issue on offense: Lack of a run game
The Texans' passing attack is humming, as quarterback C.J. Stroud ranks second leaguewide in passing yards (1,712), but an effective run game would take this offense to the top tier. They're averaging 84.8 rushing yards per game (25th) and have 32 rushing first downs on the season (tied for 22nd). Running back David Montgomery, who was acquired via trade in March, is averaging a career-low 2.7 yards per carry and missed Week 6 because of a groin injury.
Improving the ground game would give Houston more flexibility in its play-calling and reduce the burden on Stroud to produce through the air. A more effective rushing attack could also help the Texans manage the clock, sustain drives and create additional opportunities for play-action passes. The offensive line and running backs will need to work together more efficiently to turn short gains into meaningful contributions.

Ultimately, the Texans have a passing game capable of competing with the league's stronger offenses, but their rushing deficiencies remain a significant obstacle . Houston must find a way to generate more consistent production on the ground if it hopes to become a more balanced and dangerous team. Addressing that weakness could determine whether the offense remains dependent on Stroud's arm or develops into a more complete unit capable of sustaining success.
