Atlanta Braves fans watched their playoff-bound team get shut out 3-0 on Friday night in Miami. This result stings because the Marlins had lost six straight games against the National League East champion Braves. Eury Perez , a 23-year-old right-hander, was the reason. He threw a one-hitter to secure the 11th complete-game shutout in the major leagues this season.
The numbers tell a wild story. With a 9.76 ERA across six career starts against Atlanta, Perez entered the game. He was 0-3 in that matchup. Yet he allowed only one hit all night. Sean Murphy lined a single to left on a first-pitch sinker, marking the start of the sixth inning. That was the only blemish on the night for a pitcher who struck out eight and walked just one.
Perez threw 105 pitches, finishing his first complete game in 68 big league starts. This performance marks the 21st complete game of the MLB season. The league has seen record-low totals recently, with only 28 in 2024 and 29 last year. According to ESPN , this year's total sits one below last year's count. The only seasons with fewer complete-game shutouts occurred from 1871 to 1873.
The offense supported the pitching with power. Joe Mack and Griffin Conine both hit home runs for the Marlins. Mack hit his 14th of the season in the seventh inning off Grant Holmes . Holmes, who made his second relief appearance after 29 starts, gave up the run. In a two-run eighth inning, Heriberto Hernandez added an RBI single while Conine homered off Didier Fuentes . The Marlins improved to a 79-81 record, matching last season's win total.
Braves fans need to respect this win, even if it hurts. A team that enters a game 0-3 against a rival with a 9.76 ERA should not expect to lose 3-0. The fact that Perez dominated a playoff contender shows he is a force when he finds his rhythm. This was not a fluke. He held a powerful lineup scoreless for nine innings.
The loss exposes a gap in the Braves' pitching depth. They allowed no runs, yet they could not solve a young pitcher who had struggled against them before. It proves that any team can beat anyone on a given Friday night. The Braves have to stay sharp. One bad outing can derail a championship run. This game serves as a reminder that no lead is safe until the final out.
The game also carried a heavy emotional weight. On the 10th anniversary of his death in a boating accident, former Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was honored with a moment of silence.
