Everton manager David Moyes and Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill share a clear view of their teenage attacking prospect, Braiden Graham , that patience matters more than a fixed position.
According to Gary Gowers' report for Read Everton , the 18-year-old has retained his place in Northern Ireland's senior squad for four upcoming Nations League matches. He first received a senior call-up in June 2026, although he still awaits his international debut.
O'Neill has followed his progress since the player was 14 or 15. His assessment is of particular interest because the teenager built his reputation as a centre-forward at Linfield.
However, the Northern Ireland manager doesn't want to define him as a traditional No.9. O'Neill believes he could offer more value from a position slightly off the side, as a No.10 or alongside a bigger striker in a front two.
Moyes has reached a similar view after assessing the youngster as an attacker who thrives from wider positions. Meanwhile, regular involvement in Everton's senior training group has exposed him to the physical demands of Premier League football.
O'Neill is similarly reluctant to define him simply as a No.9.
"I think the most important thing is not to try and pigeonhole him into a position.
"He's adaptable and he's adaptable because he's such a good player. I think at this minute in time his best option would be to play a little bit off the side, possibly as a 10, maybe around a bigger striker if you play a front-two, which not many teams do.
"What he has shown us in training is a real high technical level and the ability to stick the ball in the net."
O'Neill's knowledge of Graham goes back well beyond his involvement with the senior Northern Ireland squad.
"I've watched him a lot, we've watched Braiden since he was young, I've seen him from like 14 or 15."
The Northern Ireland manager also spoke about the physical demands facing a young forward trying to establish himself at Premier League level.
"Every player develops physically differently. It's very difficult to play in the Premier League as a striker; look at the profile of what clubs want as their striker.
"But Braiden's a very talented player; he's a very technical player, a great finisher. He has a really good left foot, he's smart in terms of how he plays."
The case for Everton keeping the teenager at Finch Farm through the rest of the 2026/27 season rests on development rather than sentiment. At 18, he needs regular exposure to senior coaching, stronger opponents and the physical demands that separate academy football from the Premier League.

O'Neill's comments offer a useful tactical clue. Graham's left foot, finishing and intelligence could make him more effective between the lines or from an inside channel than as an isolated target man. That is important because a lone striker must regularly contest aerial balls, hold off centre-backs and create opportunities with limited support.
A January loan could provide senior minutes, yet Everton should judge that option carefully. A move only makes sense if the receiving club offers meaningful playing time and a role that suits his strengths.
Keeping him at Finch Farm would allow Moyes to develop his physical base while introducing him gradually through substitute appearances. A wide attacking role or a front two could reduce the burden of constant duels against experienced defenders.
There's a sensible balance here. Everton shouldn't rush Graham into carrying the attack, but they shouldn't leave him waiting indefinitely either. Targeted minutes, demanding training and clear tactical coaching would give the teenager room to grow without forcing an early positional verdict.
