Brian Flores will stay in Minnesota .
The Vikings announced they signed Flores to a contract extension Wednesday night to keep him as the Vikings defensive coordinator — the position he’d held since 2023.
However, there is a caveat to the extension.
Flores remains a candidate to be the next coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers or Baltimore Ravens . If he doesn’t get a head coaching job, he will return to Minnesota, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter .
Mike Tomlin stepped down as the Steelers coach after 19 seasons, while the Ravens fired John Harbaugh after 18.
Flores has interviewed with both teams.
The 44-year-old also interviewed for the Washington Commanders defensive coordinator job, but wasn’t going to leave Minnesota unless it was to be a head coach.
The Miami Dolphins hired Flores as their coach in 2019, but was surprisingly fired after three seasons . Miami had two straight winning seasons under Flores after going 5-11 in his first year at the helm.
In 2024, Flores expressed his desire to be a head coach again despite a messy end to his Dolphins tenure .
“I think a lot of people view the Miami experience as (if) I see it as all negative. I really don’t. I think it was a great experience for me and my family,” Flores said . “There’s so much that I learned during my time there that’s made me a much, much better coach today ... Better in a lot of areas. And just in reflecting on that time, there’s things that obviously I would like to do better, but there’s also a lot of things that I would continue to implement.
“But it wasn’t all negative. Obviously, there was some things that I would have done better, but I thought it was a great experience and I’ve really, really come out of it in positive way and excited about where I am now,” he continued . “I really learned a lot from it.”
