The Chicago Cubs have shown major signs of ranking with the elite teams in the National League. While the season is just 52 games old, the Cubs have already had two 10-game winning streaks. They also reeled off 15 straight wins at Wrigley Field earlier in the year.
A team that has been that explosive so early in the season would appear to be in great shape. However, the Cubs are in third place in the National League Central, trailing the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers by three games and the second-place St. Louis Cardinals by one game.
After their second 10-game streak came to an end, the Cubs have gone in reverse quickly. They have lost 11 of their last 13 games since that winning streak came to a conclusion against the Texas Rangers . They dropped a 3-0 decision to the Houston Astros Saturday, and they are reeling with seven consecutive losses.
Prior to the series with the Astros, the Cubs were swept at home by the Brewers. Fox analyst and former Major League pitcher Dontrelle Willis believes the Cubs are psyched out by the presence of the Brewers. "I think no matter how well they play, the Brew Crew is still at the back of their minds," Willis said on the Fox pregame show. "The Cubs are supposed to play defense and hit home runs, and they are not doing either of those things."
The Cubs are expecting centerfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong and former Astro and Red Sox Alex Bregman to have a huge impact on the team's attack. Both have been disappointing to this point. Crow-Armstrong is hitting .228 with 6 home runs, while Bregman is hitting .250 with 4 home runs.
