Former Boston Red Sox ace Chris Sale will remain in Atlanta for the foreseeable future.
Sale and the Braves agreed to a one-year $27 million contract extension, including a club option for $30 million in 2028, according to ESPN MLB Insider Jeff Passan .
Sale, who will turn 37 on March 30, went 7-5 with a 2.58 ERA and a 1.066 WHIP in 21 games in 2025, his second season with the Braves. The nine-time All-Star averaged 11.8 strikeouts per nine innings and 2.3 walks per nine innings. He was set to hit free agency after this season.
The Red Sox traded Sale to Atlanta in late December of 2023 for Vaughn Grissom . Sale waived his no-trade clause to facilitate the deal.
Sale previously said that if he had not been traded, he would have likely retired in 2024 .
“Before I got traded last offseason, we were planning that this year was probably going to be my last year playing,” Sale said on “Foul Territory.” “Had one more year on my contract and actually pulled our kids out of school and did homeschool this year just so we could travel.”
Five days after the trade was completed, Sale and the Braves agreed to a new contract , a two-year $38 million extension that included a club option worth $18 million in 2026.
