It sounds as if Rich Hill is calling it a career.
“I don’t have any plans on playing next year,” the former Boston Red Sox pitcher told WEEI’s Rob Bradford on the “Baseball Isn’t Boring” podcast.
Hill signed a minor league contract the Kanas City Royals in May 2025. He was called up in July and made two starts before he was designated for assignment .
In those two starts for Kansas City , Hill posted a 5.00 ERA with four strikeouts across nine innings pitched. He also gave up eight walks during that span.
Hill had four separate stints with his hometown Red Sox , including in 2024. He made four appearances before he was designated for assignment that September.
The 45-year-old would like to remain around the game of baseball, just not in the playing capacity.
“I’m looking for open possibilities to stay in the game of baseball and be a contributory factor,” Hill told Bradford . “I enjoy the work aspect of whatever it might be that’s next. I think that’s ... why athletes get hired in other positions and outside of sports is because they are highly driven people that want to succeed. And that’s something that I’m looking forward to.”
Hill pitched in 388 games for 14 different MLB teams across 21 seasons. He amassed a 4.02 ERA, 1.263 WHIP and 1,432 strikeouts.
