There are things you see differently after you've played this game.
The box score tells you who made the tackle. It doesn't always tell you who made the play.
That's what I kept coming back to while watching TCU 's defense against UCF in Saturday's Big 12 opener.
The Knights ran the ball 33 times for 106 yards, just 3.2 yards per carry. Their longest run went for 14 yards. Duke Watson , who had rushed for 177 yards the week before against Georgia State, finished with 57 on 13 carries. TCU's UCF scouting report identified Watson and the Knights' rushing attack as a central challenge.
Those numbers tell you the Horned Frogs defended the run well.
Watching the game tells you why.
And that's the part I wanted to see.
Stopping the run isn't just about the linebacker who eventually makes the tackle. Sometimes the most important defender never touches the ball carrier. He sets an edge. He takes on a blocker. He closes a gap. He forces the running back somewhere he didn't want to go and gives somebody else the tackle.
That's what gets lost when we judge defensive football by a stat sheet.
There's a point in some games when you can feel a defense stop reacting and start hunting.
You've seen enough.
The defensive line starts recognizing the blocking schemes. The linebackers see things faster and pull the trigger. The secondary recognizes splits and routes before they fully develop.
That's when defense gets fun.
The offense might still be calling the plays, but it doesn't feel like it's dictating the game anymore.
The defense is.
It took a couple of series before I started seeing flashes of it Saturday.
I can understand that. Even I was thrown off watching the first few snaps. UCF wasn't running the offense I expected to see. Instead, the Knights came out willing to throw the football early and attack TCU differently than their run-heavy identity suggested coming into the game.
Then Vernon Glover Jr. made a phenomenal heads-up play that gave the defense exactly what it needed: a turnover, a trip back to the sideline and another chance to adjust to what UCF was showing them.
The box score will tell you Glover forced a fumble by quarterback Keyone Jenkins .
That doesn't tell you what I liked about the play.
As Jenkins was going down, Glover recognized that the football was still exposed. Instead of assuming the play was over, he attacked the ball and punched it out.
That's not luck.
That's awareness.
More importantly, that's a defensive player hunting for something that can change the football game.
There's a difference between being around the football when something happens and being the reason it happens.
Glover was the reason.
Then I started noticing Hudson Hooper.
He showed up on back-to-back plays, and that's one of those things I pay attention to at linebacker. One play can happen. When the same linebacker starts showing up again on the next snap, now I'm watching closer.
Is he starting to recognize something? Is he seeing it faster? Is he pulling the trigger instead of waiting for the play to come to him?
There's a big difference between a linebacker arriving after a play declares itself and one who recognizes it early enough to go.
Glover creates the turnover.
Hooper starts showing up.
Later, with UCF threatening again, Kylin Jackson sacked Jenkins, forced another fumble and recovered it himself.
Another opportunity created by the defense.
Now I'm watching and thinking the same thing I would've been thinking when I played:

That's where good defense can turn into something different. One guy makes a play. Another guy starts playing faster. Somebody else wants the next one.
Eventually, you don't have one defender hunting anymore. You've got 11 players feeding off each other and making plays.
TCU showed me flashes of that Saturday.
What I never saw was those flashes become the personality of the game.
That's the next step.
For every flash TCU showed defensively, something reminded me the Frogs hadn't completely taken control. Jenkins still completed 19 of 20 passes.
One play probably explains it better than anything else.
UCF faced third-and-15 from the TCU 19.
That's a defensive down. You've won first and second down. You've put the offense exactly where you want it.
Now get off the field.
Instead, Jenkins found tight end Caden Piening down the middle for a 19-yard touchdown.
Six points.
That's the difference I'm talking about.
TCU made UCF work for yards. The Frogs created turnovers. Individual defenders started showing up. But they never reached the point where UCF consistently looked uncomfortable doing what it wanted to do. That's part of why the 21-13 loss in Orlando is so frustrating.
I'm not ready to say TCU became the hunter Saturday.
I saw flashes of what it could look like.
This is why I don't want to give you another box-score recap.
You can find 106 rushing yards anywhere. You can find tackles, sacks and time of possession before you finish reading this sentence.
What interests me is what happened underneath those numbers.
TCU showed me it can make an offense work for yards. It showed me individual defenders capable of recognizing an opportunity and making the kind of play that can change a football game.
What I'm waiting to see is what happens when those moments stop being individual moments.
There comes a point in a football game when somebody has to stop waiting for the game to turn and turn the damn thing themselves.
Glover tried. Hooper started showing up. Jackson created another opportunity.
Now make one of those plays become two. Then three.
Then get everybody else playing the same way.
That's when a defense starts to change. Eleven guys get pissed off that the offense still has the football. One guy sets the edge because he knows somebody else will be where he's supposed to be. Somebody gets pressure and another defender finishes it. Somebody creates an opportunity and his teammate makes sure it doesn't go to waste.
That's when a defense stops reacting and starts hunting.
The offense might still be calling the plays, but it's not controlling the game anymore.
That's what I'm watching for next, especially with BYU coming to Fort Worth after this UCF loss.
Not just who makes the next big play.
Who becomes the player, or the group of players, that refuses to let that standard be occasional?
Every defense needs somebody who makes everybody around him expect more from themselves. Somebody who turns one good series into a half, a half into a game, and eventually makes playing that way feel normal.
TCU showed flashes of that against UCF.
Now I want to know who is going to demand it every damn snap of every damn game.
